I went with genuine parts.......cost me AU$1300 plus AU$56 for the seal here in Sydney.

I've always struggled to fit aftermarket parts in my X5.......so I've always buy NEW and GENUINE at my local BMW parts store.

Every now and then I look overseas for E53 replacement parts....a lot cheaper even if you factor shipping.

Welp. Lower balljoints were causing it. Drives so nice, and steering is tight. Love it.

Can't take credit for this one. Just no time to DIY this. Had to let my friend at OMG Motorwerks figure it out. Changed lower oil pan gasket as well.

Thanks for that. I've had a metal on metal grinding sound too when turning only one way. So I had two new FAG front bearings installed and even tho mechs told me one definitely needed replacing the other didn't, it still hasn't solved my issue
Perhaps I need new lower ball joints too.

You really need to take the load off the front. And you need another person to go nuts wiggling the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position, while you look underneath. Any play at all, and they are shot.

I agree! Basically, if you have a crow bar or long sturdy iron rod, you can see the issue yourself! Lift one of the front wheels just enough to get the crow bar under the tire. Crow bar end on the pavement and middle part on the tire... lift up and relax, lift up and relax... if you see, feel, or hear clicking, there is play and they should be replaced... best to SEE what is moving so you know what exactly has failed...

Cheers!
