4.8is oil change with added bits

Hello

I recently did an oil change and 2 additional pieces fell out. First thing i did after let out some expletives was to head to xoutpost which as usual came up trumps.

Anyway so looks like i got 2/4 bits from the oil non return valve.

seems to be the consensus is too leave it unless you hear some noises

well...

https://youtu.be/VKG0GFoaI0g

so is it time to change the oil pump or could this be something else?

FYI I did both valve covers about 1500 miles ago(2 months)...I am new at wrenching so I could have f'ed something up

I did take this to a mechanic to check over the other stuff I have done and he said it could be the timing chain guides! I thought that was a 4.6is problem....I have seen the D.I.Y threads on those and I had to raise my petticoat that's a mammoth task....even the oil pump is given me the chills but I will do it if needs must.

Any advice is greatly appreciated as usual.

Forgot to mention. I get no error codes

Good day!!!

Well, I find it hard to believe that the oil change caused this!! Maybe a slight loss of oil pressure caused a lifter or follower to fall as a result of the valve cover gasket job... It doesn't sound like it should be driven, but it isn't causing the motor any ill effects either... No rough idle from what I can tell from the video...

I did the rebuild on a couple of these... The last one I did had one of the variable valve lift followers fall without me knowing it... I found it upon inspection before I put the cover on... I had to pull the assembly back off, put the follower back in place and reinstall the assembly... I think that might be what you have here... Can you isolate what side the noise is coming from? If not, I would suggest pull both covers and rotate the motor by hand while carefully watching for something that isn't like the others... I've heard of some of the followers breaking at the spring allowing movement... Either way, I think it might be a good idea to pull the covers again (or the one that the noise is isolated to)....

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...project-2.html

I pulled my oil pump apart to show where the non-return valve is located... It might be possible to get the oil pump out with the motor still in the X5... Not positive tho!!

Good luck and let us know what you discover please!!

Cheers!!!

I would never run the engine if there is any indication that the oil pressure could be less than the required minimum at any time. Finding pieces of anything in the oil pan means something bad has or will soon happen. Those are fix immediately immediately problems.

warmed up

Here is a video of the engine warmed up.

https://youtu.be/IGTdGkBqVCg

both videos are taken on a oneplus3 phone and the mic on this phone must be used for capturing alien noises from space. in real life the sound is nowhere near as bad as this sounds.

Once warmed up the car sounds ok...which makes me think its is related to the oil return valve and a dry starts.

Search here and weasel. This was discussed before. It is some sort of oil strainer part from the oil pump. People that have had it fall out have not reported having any issues with it removed. Early production n62 seemed to have these things come out. And your first vid sounds like your chain tensioners are on the way out. They are hydronic, so only makes sense they make more noise cold. You can actually see them from under the car with the stiffening plate removed. Maybe listen to them with a screwdriver when cold start.

Good day!

I seriously doubt the oil valve not being there is the issue... the one that was in my 2004 N62 was missing when I rebuilt the motor... I know it's missing now and the motor runs great! The rebuild was the result of a mechanic doing guides and not torquing the exhaust cam bolt... it spun and bent valves...

I'm pretty sure my 540i is missing it....

Pull out the long extension and big socket... put them together and listen to various parts with the extensible touching the motor and socket to your ear... you WILL know when you're on the problem area!

Cheers!
