HOw many miles

Ok, picked up my x5 for a song. Cheap. It has 187k on it. I am longbtime BMW owner. 2 M5s 1850i. I set mom up with a nice 2002 540it. I ended up hooking a 130k mile extra transmission for mom from a friend of mine that was parting these out. I have heard with the lifetime fluid, the auto's will last about 230k if you are nice to them. Then usual only clean accumulator screen and new fluid and off and running again. How many miles out of a trans in an x5 4.4? I have heardlots of different things. This x5 didnt have a hitch on it
. But i would like to put one on as a backup. I have a Duramax for the heavy stuff.

My '05 4.4 had ~188k on the trans and other than an occasional hard shift it was fine. My '06 4.8 required a full replacement at 88k. Neither had a tow hitch at the time.

+1 My '04 was at 100k when I replaced the transmission. I had driven and maintained it from 11k miles.

I know BmW says lifetime fluid. I have also heard of people changing fluid and trans fail a week later. There is a guy in SC in the great bismal swamp on BF that does tranny work. He says @ 230k drop valve body and clean 2 small screens. New fluid. Good for another 120k. IDK if i believe that. I have read the 6spd swap thread. I do not have problems with this one yet. The rest of the truck is in great shape. Lots new parts.

BMW considers the "lifetime" 100k. Mines got 135k and the tranny has been flushed and serviced by me a the PO and will need to be replaced at some point. I don't know of a anyone that got 200k out of a stock 4.4/4.6 tranny.

Flush

When you are talking flush, do you drill and dump the converter & use special blind pop rivet or just dump the 5-7 qts out of pan and refill? Not a full flush & fill. Mine is good, occasional hard shift. But not bad. I would like a 2 inch tecoever as a backup or light duty as compared to the Duramax.

New fluid and filter, havent touched the TC, but have a feeling mine is on the way out. Pulls a code occasionally for the TC not locking up. Also has a rough 3-2 and 2-1 downshift. Hoping Will pulls off his 6 speed swap and I can ditch the slush box.

Nope, removing the front drive and just sticking with a rwd 6 speed monster as they should have been. There is 1 guy that did manage to retain the Tcase and awd but it was a lot of green to do so. Had to custom fab some adapter plates and such. Personally have no use for AWD on the X. If I want to go offroad I'll take a jeep

Many engine mods, original trans at 118,000+. Change fluid and filter every 40,000 miles. Had Dinan trans software installed at about 5,000 miles.
