X5 Sunroof Rattle Solution EASY REPAIR!

So if your pano sunroof is rattling, you might be able to reduce or stop the rattle for about $5 and 5 minutes of your time. The solution: velcro strips. It's even in an official repair from BMW.

As Richardb says, best to use more than less on the rear roof, mine had already had felt tape applied, looks like many years ago and its now VERY flat. So use 3M automotive tape, its about the same thickness as the velco Richardb uses but not as springy, perhaps the felt is a better sound dampener. I am no expert all I know is I used sticky felt from 3M.

So, I removed all the existing felt, cleaned with rubbing alcohol (very very dirty in there) and then reapplied. Now, in the video it only shows you on the rear glass where to put them. I would like to point out, my rear roof is disabled as I have the issue most of us have where this part has failed and I did the quick fix cut and reset the roof to disable.

What I did was get my roof in the vent position, only the 1st main roof popped up, then pushed up on the rear gently and wedged a large auto washing sponge in it to keep it open (other stuff can be used but I had it to hand). Then I went on top standing on the rear tyre to access the roof and rear panel. Then added the felt pieces after cleaning and remove of the old one, in exactly the same position.

Next, (And the video doesn't show this) is under the Main 1st section (under the glass opening on the middle bar) where some other felt pads that I also replaced. In exactly the same position, just on the middle bar. So once I did those, and then tested it was much, much, much better, well it was fixed and silent so I was happy.

Hope that helps anyone. Also link to Original BMW fix is here

Lamby thanks for adding that additional info and sharing your experience. I actually did place some velcro on the middle section as well, in between the two sections of glass. The official BMW fix shows only the rear section, but it turns out the rattling can come from both sections of the pano roof setup.
