quick missfire question
other day I tried to find the source of the slight hesitation and misfire. took out the coil packs, found that the drivers side (uk car) was about 2 inch of oil up the coil pack tubes, so , took out plugs, cleaned and cleaned the coil tube thingies. misfire I think got better , but not 100% great plugs done I think 3 years or 40k, rest of car done 156k, I'm getting no errors or faults on scanner, you think the oil has done damage to plugs or tubes? any thoughts? steve

Oil in the spark plug tube is a known cause for misfired. Fix the oil leak, replace the valve cover spark plug tube gaskets.

just been looking through my massive wad of receipts , these are the plugs I'm running ,
BMW X5 4.4 4.6 E53 BOSCH SUPER 4 PERFORMANCE UPGRADE SPARK PLUGS SET OF 8 NEW I bought them on the 13th September 2014 they have done about 15k miles in the car, ive read on forums today, that the x5 4.4 doesn't really like these plugs and the preferred set is these BKR6EQUP ? ive got the drivers side gasket in a box in the garage , just waiting for a suitable nice day to repair , ( but its the north UK might be waiting a while)

Just like Upallnight had mentioned, your grommet for the spark plug on the center part of the valve cover is perished. Unfortunately you need to remove the valve cover and replace the grommet; which would mean replacing all the center grommets and the valve cover gasket as well. Not a problematic job for DIY, or you can have a professional do it if have enough money in the kitty. Plenty of instructions have been published and you tube videos. Hope this helps, mate!

Good idea to wait. Wouldn't want any nasty water to get into the valve mechanics, now would we? 8^)

Now, now... careful with the black sealant. That should only be placed on specific areas on the gasket (those round humps on the corners). Lookup the rocker gasket replacement and you will find out exactly where and how much. Lest you make a cock of it.

well, just to do an update, today wasn't as warm as it was supposed to be
, but it is the North UK, so I'm not 100 surprised, anyhowtook the passengers side bank plugs and the coil packs out , no sign of oil on the plugs or the coil tubes, but I wasn't expecting it as I cleaned them all a few weeks ago , new plugs fitted and coil tubes fitted at that side , onto the other side plugs out coil packs out , a slight drizzle of oil on plugs, none on tubes, then started to remove the rocker top what a bitch it was , how the bloody hell do you remove the black box that has the wires on for the coils, that's well in the way, anyway got rocker off, previous attempt at the gasket had a bead of black silicone all the way round the gasket (rocker side) and the loose paint in the grove doesn't look brilliant am leaving it for tonight now, bed time then pub later ![]() ill take pics tomorrow if any ones interested , on a side note the car has done 156k miles and it looks pretty clean in there
