Selector Rod Shaft Seal(part#24501423606)

Hi all,
Has anyone out there ever changed out this seal on their X5(auto)?? I have looked all over for any tutorials or info about it. There is not really anything good out there which talks about this. I have the part ordered(which has been discontinued and is NOT easy to find!)
My Mechanic is going to change it out for me, but I want to learn what is involved in doing it. I read that you have to be careful not to scratch the housing as you remove it...and that it's a PITA sometimes to get out
Any help or advice would be appreciated

Steve

wpoll will become famous soon enough
I think there is a special extractor tool that screws into the seal and allows you to pull it out....

Looks like this...

The black tool is the extractor - the silver drift is for installing the new seal, which is pictured at top right.

HTH....

It's a GM 5L40-E shift shaft seal, available at Rock Auto or any trans shop for about $4. ( TIMKEN 8792S )

Where did you find the part? My wife's X has developed a leak at that seal.
