Arggg, Flat Tires...

My CEO's new X1 caught a nail a weekish ago, so I went down the Mtn to our 'best' hillbillyheaven tire joint and they patched/plugged it...

I begged the tire guy to be careful breaking bead on the tire and R&R, and he was. I even suggested he mark the tire/wheel so he could put the 2 month old factory balance job back on in a 'close' remount. He looked at me like I was talking jibberish, but he did it.

Next up, our 17 yr old X5 has had a slow leak in driver side rear tire for a couple of weeks. I could not find a nail anywhere in tread...

It went in to the Asheville Indy a day ago for some 'stuff' that I don't feel like doing myself, and as they had installed the current set of Micheys 7 yrs and 42,000 miles ago, (like eye surgeons they are so meticulous on tire jobs), I was hoping for a bad valve stem, et al.

They called and said they found a small, worn down nail or screw in outside tread right next to sidewall. They won't patch/plug it and though the tires are due for replacement sooner or later, (fronts not quite to wear bars), I wasn't in mood of a $grand + of tires and mounting this trip, and one new tire won't 'work'.

I am going to keep that tire on like it is and deal with the occasional pump up, and get a new set next Spring after we migrate north back to the Mtn Home from our EscapeWinter house.

New Car/Old Car, two tire situs in the same damn week. What you gonna do...

PS: 2 1/2 months with the CEO's new F48 X1 and I give it a solid C+.
It may be the least interesting, less 'satisfying' new car I have owned in 55 years of lots of different cars.

Went through something like this earlier this year. CEO had factory Dunlop tires on her 4Runner LTD, only 54K/4mm tread but 12 years old!
The X had a slow that turned into a horror story so it was time for two sets of tires. Really like Yokohama Geolandar HS so we put them on both vehicles. That's it, done with tires I thought. Wrong!! Front tire on the Bad Boy got sliced by the barber wire fence. So we had to dismount the wheel from the fork and get another new tire for it. Our tire place should be sending us a Christmas Card this year. I'm tired.

Long time no hear - other than the tire issues, hoped that all is well on your end?

If you don't mind, could you provide a quick review of exactly what you don't like about the X1? You can PM me if you preferred. My CEO is also eyeing one, but I am trying my best to convince her out of it. Thanks.

Eeeks MD. Any remote signs of rot on a 7 year old tire?

I've always been replacing our 275/315 in random like it's going out of style. Either due to potholes (one year I got 3 sidewall blowouts over the course of 2 weeks right post winter).

I've got a slow leak on a 315 right now....and can't find a nail/protrusion anywhere. Just give it some 02 every 3 weeks

Zero rot/deterioration, other than tread wear...even my Indie, who installed the set 7 years ago, was amazed at tire condition.

He said a flat patch might be doable, but wasn't crazy about 'disturbing' the hole by pulling object and patching...I agreed and we are leaving the object in situ. I can live with occasional tire pump up, and sets are not currently available and I have too much other stuff going on. This RetiredBum gig is hell.

It is a very casual use car, usually, so I will deal with it 'later' or next Spring.

I can say that the 12 years old Japanese Dunlops we just replaced were still in good condition but I did not want to risk a blow out on the highway for some unseen problem. From reports on the the 4Runner forum the long life of these tires is the norm and nobody has every found a replacement that performs to the same extent. There is/was something unique about these factory tires.

I'll be more concern with the lower ball joint blowing out. Oh, those were on Sequoias, never mind.

Brake caliper lockup is a bigger problem. We also found out that the transfer cases in these TOYS are very fragile. Only cost $3800 to find that one out the hard way!!!
So much for ultra-reliable TOYS!

OT, for those into detailing, do you think/feel tire coatings might play a role in tire longevity....

I've been coating my rubber for the last couple of years. I can't account for it, but I did have 1 tire that showed premature rot, which I was not expecting. Was not sure if it was due to coating no allowing to tire to ~bloom~, or flex, etc...just something on my backburner of thinking
