SHUT THE Front door!
when the window is rolled down.l am referencing when the door is closed with window down. With the windows rolled up, it's a solid feeling door. Why is when the window down it rattles so much? I have replaced both doors with the upgraded slider rails. Also, replaced the black window holder thing. Door sounds cheap with window down, why is that?

Mine don't rattle with the window down and closing the door.
Haven't really noticed any difference honestly. I will try paying attention next time I have the window down. Im a big fan of a/c so I don't usually have them down that much.

I don’t notice a big difference with the windows rolled all the way down either, but partially rolled down or half way, yes that’s a big difference. That’s just the noise of the window rattling around though. At least that’s what I tell myself..... lol

Mine does same thing. I always thought it was due to the fact that there had been some really crappy body work done to it by previous owner and some thing was probably missing or misaligned.

Both ours sound horrible and rattly with the window half down when you shut the doors, especially after the E38 and its double glazing. Those windows never rattle in the frames!

My X5 is also afflicted with this syndrome. Driver side is MUCH worse than passenger. Have replaced both regulators and associated components due to failures... assembled properly but no change. Sounds cheap as you mention anytime I close the door with the windows partially down (or even all the way down).
I try not to close the doors though with the windows partially down so as not to put extra strain on the regulator. Plus that noise...

....is the issue the "rattling" sound...or is it the way the door closes when the window is down?
In regards to the "rattling" sound...I'm with crystalworks in that I try to avoid having the windows down when closing the door...and if they are down, I close extra gently...as not to damage the regulators. In regards to the way the doors feel when the window is down vs up...that is due to the difference in air pressure within the cabin. When the windows are up...the doors appear to be more solid due to air pressure within the cabin. The only escape with the windows rolled up is through the vents designed in the rear of the vehicle which allows built up air pressure to escape to the exterior. I believe the slits along the top of the trim below the rear cargo glass is how air within the cabin begins its journey to the outside. Behind the interior trim are vents with flaps that get pushed open when the air pressure gets high enough. The pics below are the location of one of these vents mentioned above in my e38's & e39's battery compartment...the e53 should have these vents behind the interior trim, too: {screwdriver is sticking through my e38's air vent that allows excess air pressure within the cabin to escape to the exterior of the vehicle}
{pic below is my e39's battery compartment & you can see its air vent to the exterior that reduces air pressure within the cabin} ![]()

Just the way it is. I think the window is tapered slightly to make it slide easier in the channels. The window is relatively loose and wobbles but apparently that motion slaps against the motivation hardware and makes for some really horrible sounds
