Starting problem, could use some advise

Good morning,
I have a issue with my x5 not starting. It will start, I will drive it somewhere and then it will not start 20 min later.
I drove it this morning breakfast and when I went out to start it It just made clicking sounds, like a low battery. AAA jumped it
Second time this has happened. It starts in t he morning and then does not start.
My question is this, why would it start and be driven but then not start after?
I checked the voltage while it was running and it was 13.9
when it is sitting it is 12.6
I am still thinking starter, however it is strange it can be jumped started.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Edit - just went and checked it with Voltmeter and the battery was reading 10.8. Must be the battery

The voltage in the battery is 12.6 when it is necessary to have it jump started?

I had it jumped and drove it home, tested it when I got home and it was at 10.8

I just don't know why it started this morning and then didn't start after 20mins of sitting.

Alternator seems to be working fine. Maybe just a bad battery

10.8 its either a bad battery or a bad alternator. I'm betting alternator. Bad battery would not crank in the morning. Alternator would be after a drive.

These are juts guesses based on the norm.

You need to monitor the voltage while driving to know whats really going on AFER charging the battery back up fully.

Since battery registered 13.9 with engine running I suggest having the battery load tested. You can also unlock the cluster and go to test 9 to check battery voltage and monitor alternator output.

Before replacing battery you definitely want to confirm the charging system is working. Get the battery load tested as well.

Well, DOh! I think it was a loose + battery cable. The aux amp connector I had added made it so it wasn't able to be fully tightened. I was able to turn the cable end freely on the battery.
The cluster test is about the most helpful thing ever. I am going to use it for the next week to keep track of everything. The reading are slightly lower than my voltmeter. I am going to trust BMW over harbor freight tool.
thanks again

Readings are close enough to trust for troubleshooting. One the top ten rules of DIY. There are no coincidences. If you did some work and right after or shortly after you have a problem that could be connected--check your work.
