Smile 2005 X5 e53 4.4i facelift air con problem

Hi Guys,

My air cool air stopped working the other week. Took it to a local mechanic and he re-gased it but found the clutch wasn’t engaging. Suggested a new compressor but he was able to gas it ok. Have been reading a ton of material on fourums and many mention the aux fan between the radiator and the bumper. I don’t have one there. The only fan I have is between the radiator and the engine. I can see three wires coming from it (two heavy and one light) which tells me that perhaps this is it? But, I thought the engine needed a fan for cooling.

Anyway, the forums say that when I start the engine and turn on the air-con by pressing the snow flake button that this fan should start up for a short while. Mine doesn’t start at all. Is it supposed to on my model?

Any help would be appreciated.

regards

ok, so i went out on a run and got the engine up to temp and checked under the hood and the fan was running. But this is probably due to cooloing engine only.

You have the 4.4 V8 engine X5 and some V8 X5 didn't have the aux fan. Also unless the mechanic has an ac machine that can force refrigerant into the system via the high side port, the most common method of "regassing" the system is through the low side port and for that, the compressor has to be engaged.

Thank you! Come to think of it I didn’t get charged for any gas just labor. I think I will take it to BMW for a level 1 diagnostic. Although, I was curious if I could use the same technique of viewing the fan to see if it came on when engaging the a/c with this model. Should it come on I wonder.

bmw x5 2005 facelift air con

I also read that if you disconnected the fan that the air con sometimes work if the clutch is still ok. But how do you do that on my model as I only have the one fan for cooling the engine? Perhaps just run the engine a little bit without it?

Question fan not working

Hi guys, can anyone confirm this for me. I only have one aux fan on my car that is between the engine and radiator. I have learnt that this should turn on when the ac is engaged. Is this true? On mine it is not turning on. It does turn on when i get back from a drive and the engine is up to temp.

regards
