Yup, it's behind the Alt. Bracket!

Very Sure! There is sooo much oil right where BMW put that ridiculous hole behind the bracket. The alternator and surrounding area is soaked with oil. I also have a Valve cover leak at the half moon on the passenger side, but that is insignificant to the bracket gasket. And I refuse to work on it until late spring/early summer. I don't do cold weather since it's going to take me at least two to three days to do it. I figure I will need more time to clean all the oil off of the parts.

Like I kind of eluded to before, personally I will clear my whole weekend to do this job. 1 day to tear down and 1 day to put it back together. But, I'm one man, with a floor jack and stands, hand tools, and an engine support bar.[/QUOTE]

For sure, I'm like you! Since I won't be doing the work until the weather is warm/hot, I guess I should get an engine support bar.

I forgot to mention, I did read from someone on either this forum or another, but one guy welded the holes so that it wouldn't be a problem anymore. I'm thinking of doing this!

Can I assume that if you are just changing the Alternator you don't have to go through all that mess?

I wouldn't think so, since the alternator removal is one of the first things you have to pull off before diving into this type of job.

no... BUT... there have been rumors on these boards that just messing with the alternator can cause this leak to become apparent. I've been lucky, but I've heard..
