The % of brightness is controlled by coding the option. This requires either the aftermarket android stereo with the ibus adapter like semcoinc mentioned or using a notebook computer and ncs expert type of tools to program them to a different brightness level.

Changing the bulb may effect brightness somewhat but the % of power going to the bulbs (the real brightness determining factor) has to be adjusted by coding.

My High Beam factory bulb spec is 9005 and the fog/driving light (in the bumper) is H11.

What Crowz said about the coding options to get 50% brightness in the high beam bulbs when used as DRLs is accurate.

Source yourself the nicest pair of High Beam LEDs and driving/fog bulbs as your budget allows and have at it.

The LEDs with an internal fan seem to offer great lumen output (probably because they have to reject so much heat generated by the LED) from what I've seen in reading their specs.

I am fond of the 5000K-6000K color range which works for me.

I think the highbeam bulb varies by pre and post facelift.

This chart shows all the years and options bulb wise :

http://crowz.narmir.com/vehicles/bmw...w-light-bulbs/

2005 - 2006 uses h7's for the high beams.

2000 - 2004 uses 9005/HB3 for the high beams.

Here are my 2003 factory Xenon bulbs

Here are the high beam LEDs activated

And here are the coded 50% DRL high beam LEDs + 100% driving light LEDs:

I am very pleased with this level of brightness for night and night w/rain driving.
