Key stuck in driver’s door lock

Went out today to reinstall rear door panels after successfully replacing window regulators, only to have my key get stuck in the driver’s door lock. I’ve removed the lock from the door, and even after much lubrication and turning the key in the lock, it still won’t go back to the position where I can remove the key. I’m assuming my next step will be to disassemble the lock mechanism, and obviously to repair that mechanism. Will I be able to disassemble it without first getting the key out? Where’s the best source for a lock cylinder rebuild kit?

As always, any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

The dealer...unless you want to tinker around and try to code the key cylinder yourself. You can look up the part number on realoem.com for the "coded" lock cylinder. Then check online and with your local BMW dealership's Parts Dept (not the service department) to see which would be the least expensive. You may even be able to get the local dealership to price match if it costs less online or from other BMW dealerships.

If you order the coded replacement...it will come already "keyed" to your key blade.

{#11 can be ordered "coded" to already match your existing keys based on your VIN}

I rebuilt my key cylinder recently. I am confident I would be able to repair that cylinder. Maybe I could FaceTime and help you work it out. If the key turns 100% chance. Absolutely worst case scenario, cut the cylinder open to extract the key and pins. Get a cylinder empty and move your pins over.

Most often this type of jam is from a bent pin (blade) or a spring that got loose and is jammed.

I've fixed very similar problems often. Just yesterday in the case of a house dead bolt.

YouTube can sometimes be useful. Found this video from 50sKid, really help with rebuilding the lock.

https://youtu.be/f-f-rkejtuY

Paid $8.99 on Amazon to get the rebuild kit, took me maybe 30 minutes to get the lock rebuilt and back on the driver’s door. No more worrying about someone with a screwdriver unlocking the car.
