06 3.0 Will not strat after rear end tap/impact?

Can anyone help with this and know what this is.

I was tapped in the rear by another car, almost no damage to my bumper, trailer hitch took most of the impact om my 2006 3.0.

I smelled gun powder as if a bullet was fired in the car, the car shut off, I have full lights everything works except the starter will not engage-dead. Something....a safety device was activated I guess to shut the car off so it would not catch fire...I'm thinking a main fuse link or something?

I had the car towed to my house, AAA. I would like to drive the car for a while before it goes to the body shop...again virtually no damage but a hard hit or jolt. The new Volvo car that hit me her front end is smashed, hood bent and fender damage.

If anyone is familiar with this and can point me in the right direction if these cars have some link that blows on impact.

Thanks

A bullet was fired in the car. It's called the BST or battery safety terminal. A small charge of high explosive disconnects the battery to eliminate dangerous short circuits after a crash.

Look into the fixes or workarounds. People often simply eliminate the BST but the detonator is part of the air bag system and things won't work without a trick (like a resistor to fake out the computer).

I would either see if I can get a decent price on a pick me pull cable with the BST intact or I would rebuild the cable including explosive charge (I have family that reload ammo and a blank .22 with a model rocket ignitor would probably do the trick.

The bst has an interlock to keep the cable disconnected after the gun goes off but the plastic connector does come apart and should be fairly easy to reassemble back to functional (without the explosive disconnect)

Guys, thank you for the quick response and great info!!!!

I'd rather bypass this, I don't want this to happen again in a tap in the rear. I have 5ohm resistors and I've used them on my bikes when I disconnect emissions crap to fool the computer.

Any info and exactly how to wire the resistor or where it should be wired to trick the computer ?

Again Thanks!! great info and thanks for the help...I'm going to pick up a new one so I can drive the car today.

Post some pics and stuff when you do the repair. Would love to have more info for anyone wanting to do the bypass in the future.

That should work out pretty good. Just be careful of the clips installing it onto your cable.

For $63 I would definitely replace the BST to keep the safety factor.

That said, I would also figure out a manual bypass I could install in the field if the BST activated in the future maybe even in the form of a short cable with a battery disconnect switch.

In fact for $10 each I think I'm going to buy a couple of those and install them in both mine and wife's x5 so we can drive home in the event of a bumper tap. If it's pre installed it takes just a hand twist of a big thumb screw.

You may be able to connect a battery at the engine jump terminals and start it from there if you just want to verify that it the BST cable that blew, but from your description, it is probably the BST cable. Any cable at my Pick N Pull is only $5.00 and that would include a BMW BST cable. They just got an X5 in the yard so I may just go back and get the cable.

Looks like an easy repair.
