Passenger Side Axle Shaft removal from tranny....need options

Forum

I am changing my axle shaft passenger side on jacks stands. Not much height, and I PRAY I do not have to remove the metal plate below.

Need tips on how to pry this thing out of tranny with the small opening I have.

Seen the videos and other tips and understand some got lucky...

Just wondered if any of you used a tool or specific length rod to tap out?

Appreciate the help...up in air without a paddle.

I did this axle shaft replacement on my 4.4i and what I did was remove three bolts from the "skid/stiffening" plate and rotated it out of the way to give me access from below. This allows a relatively easy reinstallation of the plate back into position.

To dislodge the axle from the differential housing I used a long flat blade screwdriver or pry bar on the end of the axle flange and gave the tool a sharp hit with a hammer to snap the retaining ring past its seat.

If you can get better access by taking the cover plate do that for sure. I haven't taken that end out on mine but I think the trick is to get the ring centered in the groove so that it doesn't get hung up. You could try turning the shaft with only a slightl bit of pressure to try and center the ring, and also try turning it do different positions and try to put pressure on evenly from 2 sides. That being said, I think some guys just get mean with it and it pops out! Make sure the ring pops back in properly when you re-install.

If you see fluid leaking at the inboard side of the shaft either the oil seal for the shaft or the o-ring between the oil pan and the housing is no longer is no longer working. I would remove the housing and replace the o-ring and oil seal. Now would be a good time since you have the axle out.

Crowz will become famous soon enough
I changed both of mine when I redid my wheel bearings but Im not going to give advise since I destroyed both perfectly good axles when removing them

Good luck.

Pry bar and a dead blow hammer. Hit it inboard of the spider joint; two or three whacks and it should pop right out.

As mentioned, good time to replace the seal in the support on the passenger side.
