Used Cars in NYC

Eventually, I plan to upgrade to an E70. I watch them from time to time on CarGurus, which searches multiple used car listings and shows the price relative to blue book value. I normally just search my area, but thanks to snoopy cookie tracking, Facebook knows I am interested in an E70 and often shows me CarGurus ads for E70's in other areas. Quite often, I have found really good deals on them in the NYC area. I just did a search of E70's near NYC and found quite a few good deals. Is that normal for all makes? Same for other extra large cities?

I know they had widespread flooding from Irene several years ago, but most of these listings have links to clean CarFax reports. Of course, if I were ever seriously looking to buy one from that area, I would try to make certain it wasn't flooded.

I just bought a 2013 from Atlanta luxury motors in Georgia. HUGE dealership with a ton of x5's. I got mine for 6k under kbb. Might try them. Their website has lots of pics of each car.

Not usually that impressed with dealerships but this one was a very nice experience to deal with.

There's a reason for cars being cheap in NYC. Plenty of cars and they are in the salt belt so they normally just rust out. Better to look for older cars in the Sun Belt like Alabama.

My experience is that a lot of them are auction based buys (like the Prestige Auto Gallery, which I would stay away from) and a lot of them don't have good reviews. (Example: Some say the car had major issues right after buying)

If you are looking at NYC area, stick with EMG, deluxe auto if you aren't looking at bigger dealerships. Just check out the car's history as well. Lot's of shady dealerships in Queens/Brooklyn/Bronx that have older luxury cars and they say they finance anyone.

When I was shopping for an A4, I found one with low miles and the relatively rare "Prestige" package in Queens, advertised on-line. When I called to inquire, I was informed that the advertised price was net of a $2500 "fee". Shady as fook.

I wasn't really looking to buy a car from NYC - I live in Indiana. I just noticed that so many of the best deals that pop up were from there. Unless there was an incredible deal and I had a lot of info on the car history, etc.., I doubt I would buy one from there.

Shady dealers notwithstanding, I suppose price is driven by supply & demand, which is apparently a lot different there.

I would stick to southern vehicles since they are not subjected to the abuse of poor road conditions and inclement weather road treatments.

People who live in NYC never buy a car from here. We all look south for our vehicles. NYC cars have lots of stop and go traffic time and battle wounds from parking in the streets no to mention our terrible roads.

The salt in NYC/NJ area isn't as bad as it is further inland. Our weather tends to be more mild at the coast and salt gets washed away quickly. about 350 miles to our west in Pittsburgh, the cars rust out if you look at them funny. I wouldn't be too concerned about rust, but the condition of the suspension/wheels and bumpers. The roads are simply awful in that city. If it's giving you a blanket area, I'd look for cars in NJ, south eastern PA and Delaware.

I normally just search within 100 miles of Indy. Of course, Indy is Salt Belt, so cars around here can have corrosion issues. Lucky for me, my E53 never saw any salt until I bought it in 2015. PO lived in Seattle, then Oklahoma. Undercarriage is still virtually rust free, compared to many of the pics and videos of DIY's I have looked at.
