Fuel pump

I got a 2002 bmw x5 4.4i and I'm trying to locate the fuel pump relay, can anyone point me in the right direction? Also can anyone give me a idea why my fuel pump only come on when I try cranking the car and it doesn't come on when the key is turn to the accessories POSITION? I thought the fuel relay was one of the two green relay in the cargo bay but I checked a few diagram and apparently it's not it.. The only one close to a relay is the f47 fuse in the glove compartment but it check out to be good.

Are you sure it is supposed to come on at ACC? I believe it is more normal for most cars for the initial fuel pump prime to happen when the key first goes to ON.


EDIT - and to be clear, I'm talking about when the options are
0 - LOCK (key can be inserted and removed here)
1 - ACC - radio works, etc. but ignition is not enabled.
2 - ON - this is where it is when you drive around
3 - START - to start the car, only

If BMW calls these different things, I'm not talking about the specific names

Sorry I meant to say the on position. I have the pump out but still plug to the harness but it doesn't do anything unless I try to start the car

There is no reason for the fuel pump to come on in any key position other than Position II (RUN). Why would you ever want the fuel pump to be energized when the key is set to Position I (ON)? The key positions are 0 - Off, 1 - On, 2 - Run, and 3 - Start. There is no ACC position, but ON is what you get if you are looking for it. RUN and START are key positions where you should expect the fuel pump to be on. If there is no input from the crank position sensor, the fuel won't pump. (Why put gas into a fire that isn't happening?) When yo uare starting the engine, the crank sensor detects that the engine is rotating so the fuel will flow.

What are you trying to figure out?

I'm trying to figure out why the car doesn't stay running jtstrickland.. every time I start the car it dies after a few second or sometime the car keep cranking on and on till I turn the key back off.. sorry it's hard for me to explain I might post a video later on and maybe someone can give me some ideal on what to check

Just bypass the fuel pump relay. Jump pins 30 and 87 and the pump should run. If it does than either the relay is bad or the signal from the DME is not present. You should be able to swap the horn relay with the fuel pump relay to check to see if the relay is bad.

I'm thinking all fuel pump should prime in the on position.. Shouldn't I be able to hear the pump come on or in my case since I have the pump out see it running.. is BMW different? This is the first BMW I own so somethings are brand new to me and I'm still learning

Overboost I was thinking the same thing. But why the heck is the relay in such a difficult spot lol.. I really appreciate everyone's help
