OP, has there been any resolution to this? Hopefully your not out in the bush melting into your black seats. Anyway, I had what looks like the same experience in my '04 3.0i w/139,000mi this week. With a newborn coming home as early as next week - I wanted to get it professionally diagnosed, so I took it into a specialist. Repair estimate states: "Check A/C not cooling - Advise. Pressure Test and inspection finds fualty compressor. Compressor engages, but loses low side suction ability as it runs. Engine driven fan clutch not operating fully - causes excessive high side pressure in a/c system. Over time, this strains the high pressure portion of the system. Repair summary is NEW BMW compressor ($1002.53), Condensor ($587), Fan clutch ($326.30) + misc + labor = $2649.84.
All that said, I can source a nice, used, calsonic kansei compressor for $133 OR a brand new HELLA BEHR unit for $328. I can get a brand new condensor (BEHR) for $104 and a brand new fan clutch (BEHR) for $83. This shop will only used the parts quoted in estimate, sourced by them. My ideas are to buy parts on my own and use a different shop for install ($500, labor) OR, start with fan clutch replacement MYSELF and see if that shows signs of improvement before having a different shop install the compressor and condensor ($400, labor). I am writing to find out if there is an update from OP on what worked, or didn't...AND to learn if replacing just a failing fan clutch could potentially ANY impact on A/C performance. Also, is this full job what the dash will need removed for...or is that other HVAC components that I remember reading about on here? Thanks for any insight, especially from OP. Thanks! Phew! And $83 was for next day shipping. Then, I found it on FCP Euro for only $63.99.
