Exclamation Check Brake Linings (Please aid me!)

I was driving the X today, and suddenly I got this error "check brake linings".

I was not braking at the time. I was doing around 40km/h (as you can see). Along with the text error, the car now has this red exclamation point icon lit up.

I do not see any difference in pedal feel, brake power, odd smell, vibration, etc.

Can someone please explain what this error means, and for how much more distance I can continue driving (my dealer cannot take me in a one day notice)?

Means the sensor is telling your computer that it's worn out, which usually means it's time for new brake pads. Not to worry, you have some life left in them yet.

How much life exactly? Like, can I drive another 40 miles?

You shouldn't have a problem with 40 miles (assuming of course the 40 miles aren't at an autocross event ). Generally when this goes off you should have it addressed within hundreds of miles, not thousands of miles.

Alright cool. I'm gonna have the X serviced for this on Friday or Saturday. Thanks for the responses.

The sensor is designed to wear out when the pad gets close to minimum thickness. You're good for awhile, but schedule that brake pad and sensor replacement. There should be two sensors, one driver's side front, one passenger side rear on my '01 X5. Don't get charged for 4 sensors if they only replace two!

Yep, the replaced both of our sensors when that happened to us about a week ago. They gave us new rotors to for free.
