Fasten Seat Belt Warning Coming On But No Passenger in Seat

2006 X5 3.0i

My fasten seat belt warning light is going off for the front passenger seat but with no passenger or objects on the seat. Fastening the seat belt turns it off.

It used to be intermittent for about a month but now is doing it all the time. Now, I have to keep the seat belt fastened all the time.

What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Thanks!

- It is the mat sensor acting up on pass side.
- It is not a cheap fix.
- Just insert the pass seat belt on pass side to turn off the light.
- Or get a junk seat belt from junk yard, cut off the end and insert it as a decoy. Whenever you have a passenger, simply remove the decoy and insert the real seat belt.

I found some more info on this. There was a recall for this. But I think only applied to 2006 X5’s that had sport seats? Going to contact one of my local dealers.

I was also looking for an emulator that had been mentioned in other threads. But I don’t think there is one for the 2006? My production date is 6/2006. The emulators seem to cut off for models before 10/2005.

Does anyone know of an emulator for the 2006 models?

I have a 2006 (build date 12/05) and I do NOT have sport seats...and fell under the recall and got a new lower cushion which contained a new mat sensor from BMW a few years ago.

If you haven't registered your contact info with BMW USA....then they wouldn't have a way to send you recall notification. You may want to got to the www.bmwusa.com and register your VIN and address.

You can also call the toll free number listed in your owners manual and other docs in the binder (or google it) and speak directly with a customer service rep...especially if you local dealer looks at you as if you have a 3rd eye in the middle of your forehead when you aske them about it.

Called BMW. They said my X5 is not under recall for this. Said to take it to a dealer to determine if it should be repaired under warranty. Maybe I'll try it but I don't have any faith in the dealer doing anything.

Does anyone know of an emulator that works for the X5 builds after 10/2005?
