Towing 2156lb tent trailer without electric brake

Hi,

So I just got OEM trailer hitch installed but haven't installed electric brake controller yet. Just no time for that at this moment.
Having said that, I'll be going to camping in next couple weeks, and thinking of renting friend's tent trailer which is weighted at 2156lb.

Should it be ok to tow without electric brake? or don't even bother?
Anyone there have experience with it?

Thanks!

I tow a boat that weight and it has surge brakes. One winter my dog chewed through the brake line and the brakes were inop until I repaired it a month later. Truck handled the weight OK, but it was a lot of pedal to stop fast. I like brakes on the trailer - peace of mind - especially on the Coquihalla.

I've towed an SL (R230) Mercedes up through the grapevine from LA to SF with a standard flatbed trailer. You should be great, just check your brakes / tires / tire pressure before hand.

That car weighed 4300lbs + the flatbed trailer.

Sold mine when I sold my Jeep a few months back. Man, I miss camping and wheeling.

Where did you get your hitch from? I only ask as I want to make sure you ARE using the OEM one and NOT some of the aftermarket ones that are marketed as such. OEM is no longer available new so hopefully you got a complete kit from someone reputable! With that being said at 2156 you should be okay, I wouldn’t worry till 2158 myself...

You should be fine. The link is no longer active but assuming what I can (minus my 2lbs of snark) it is legit. Enjoy towing with the X. I have no issues going up to the max of 6k with surge brakes

Buy a Tekonsha wireless. No splicing into your wire harness. Just mount the box to the trailer and it's done. Painless and you have brakes then.

Yes, I'm looking into Tekonsha Prodigy RF for minimal work.

I only towed my old 2400lb tent trailer a couple of times, but it seemed fine without trailer brakes. I'd only worry if you have a long downhill stretch. I have also towed my 3000lb camper a.couple of times without brakes and it's alright as long as you're not going downhill. I might worry if there's a lot of downhill. At 2150lbs you should be fine. Make sure to try to drain the water tanks before each trip.
