X5 e53 3.0d - Fuel Range suddenly dropped.

We recently went through some investigating as part of sorting another issue on our diesel and did a few maintenance items which have greatly improved the economy.

I figured that the glow plugs weren't really an issue as we live in a warmer climate and it started and ran fine so hadn't got around to them.

All 6 were buggered so replaced them while it was in the shop. Straight away it ran smoother... go figure...

Did the PCV and filter while at it. The intake hose had a split in it so while it was open had a look at the EGR. It was caked with carbon.

Cleaned it and we now have a smoother running car and have eliminated the big puff of smoke when you plant the foot. At present just doing long runs to get the rest of the crap out of it...

Economy is actually increasing as we drive it more. My wife reports that it has more power, has lost the hesitation off the line and doesn't feel like a 'diesel truck' anymore... much smoother idle, more responsive....
