Weird grinding sound
I have an e53 X5 3L and i have noticed this weird grinding sound coming from the car when driving. I can't hear it when driving, but if i drive past a wall or a parked car with one of the front windows open it sounds like grinding noise coming from the wheels. Same noise from both sides. Eventually the front pads got too thin and the noise stopped. I changed the pads thinking it must be them, but the noise returned with new pads. I also had the front calipers rebuilt including new pistons but the noise is still there. I think it gets quieter when braking but i cant be sure Any ideas anyone?? |

The callipers "slide" on two steel guide pins. There are rubber boots on the callipers that the guide pins fit into. These are supposed to be fitted dry (no grease) and to work correctly (allowing the calliper to centre correctly on the brake rotor) the guide pins need to be clean and smooth, with no brake dust build up or pitting etc. The rubber boots also need to be in good condition too, and not missing the plastic caps on the end of the boot.
These pins and boot are often over-looked in a rebuild. Parts 4-6 in this image... ![]()

I had the same problem. Ended up being rust scraping on the rotors between the rock guard and the rotors.
