4.8iS instrument cluster issue
First thing I did was run a diagnostic and found the fault for the instrument cluster issue which I knew the car had prior to purchasing it. So it works intermittently and happened to me while I drove it to get gas. All the needles fuel, speedo, rpm, and temp all power down and when it's about to happen they bounce up and down like it's working on and off. As soon as I restart the car the issues goes away and has happened again yet. The cluster remains lit, just the needles stop working. Car drives fine when is happening and don't know what triggers this either. The code comes up as 00003F: ![]() Any ideas as to what could be the culprit? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Bump.... Found somewhere online about pulling fuses 1,43, & 45 for the cluster and reinstalling it. Seemed to have worked for a day and this morning it happened again.
Even when I run the test 2 on the cluster the needles don't move. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I would drive for a couple of miles and all gauges would go to zero and flash all of the lights in a reset. This sometimes happened 2-3 times in a row. ![]() I likely have good news and bad news for you.... The bad news: I resolved it by replacing my cluster. I looked it over, tested capacitors, etc but there wasn't anything obviously wrong with it that could be reasonably repaired.I had to do quite a bit of research to figure out how to do that without spending a ton on a new cluster from BMW but I eventually got it. ![]() I bought a couple of used clusters (from a lower mileage e70 X5's) and they didn't have that problem but of course caused the tamper light to activate. Figuring it out took a while so I bought the second one so that I could work on it while driving around with the first replacement. It is important to get a lower mileage unit so that it doesn't bump the car up to the mileage of a higher mileage cluster when it syncs the mileages from all of the places that it stores it. This does have the consequence of setting the tamper dot on the car. I think it will remain even if you re-install the original cluster if you drive the car at all due to a mileage inconsistency. The good news: the tamper dot can be cured! The X5 clusters appear to all be essentially the same regardless of engine. One nice thing on the newer ones is that the cruise control has a red/green indicator on it that my original didn't have. I was able to eventually reprogram (re-virgin) the VIN in the cluster with a prom programmer and get it to work so my problem is now solved. When the VIN is reset it will then remove the tamper dot when re-coded. This only works when the VIN is reset though. ![]() How many miles do you have on your rig? I have a spare cluster that I could reprogram for you at a cost but it has about 115k miles so it would only work if you have more miles than that. Getting the miles back to zero is more work but can be done. There are some tools to override eeprom write protection to do it but they don't always work so the only sure fire way is to install a new eeprom. I have some new eeproms on order so that I can reset it to be a true virgin cluster (no miles logged in the cluster) but they haven't arrived yet. Note that this does not change the vehicle mileage because redundant copies are stored in other modules. It will show the highest mileage in the system on the cluster (instantly if the cluster is lower, or after ~60 miles if the cluster is higher). The problem with the tamper dot is that if you go in to the dealer or emissions with the dot showing they will flag it forever in the system and it will show as something like "inconsistent mileage" on a carfax/autocheck which can really hurt the vehicle's value. I am considering creating a few "re-virgined" e70 clusters to sell for people if anyone is interested. This would make them equivalent to a new unit from BMW but at a much lower cost. Reprogramming a virgin cluster is actually just a matter of recoding the Kombi (instrument cluster). Changing ANY feature in the Kombi will update a virgin cluster's the VIN and remove the tamper dot. I enabled digital speed display through ncsexpert which made it work without having to directly write the VIN. -Rich Last edited by rbryantaz; 09-07-2018 at 04:19 PM. |

Mine currently has 117k but the spare one you have is from a 4.8iS?

This one was from a 3.0si. From what I found the e70s all seem compatible (the redlines are all the same, etc). I currently have a 2011 4.4l twin turbo one in my 2007 4.8i. The only difference I see on the newer one is the cruise control status bar is a green/red block instead of a white bar. One of the lights had a slightly different display too but it wasn't significant. Send me a PM if you are interested or need help. -Rich Last edited by rbryantaz; 09-07-2018 at 05:32 PM. |

Bump....still trying to figure this out. I contacted a BMW instrument cluster repair store that fixes dead pixels and stepper motors and he did not think it was a stepper motor issue from what I described him and suggested I check other connections first. Thankful he was honest.
The DSC 4x4 light came on yesterday briefly which went off by itself as I drove further, not sure if that's related. |

4.8iS instrument cluster issue
Update!
Purchased a used cluster with higher mileage and took to a local shop that said they could code and correct the mileage without de-soldering the chip because they have all the software and tools/cables but they couldn't. All they were able to do was code it and remove the tamper dot but mileage remained higher. To make matters worse it over wrote the higher mileage to all my modules except the LCM luckily. So I sent it to a guy on bimmerforums and he sent it back "virginized" and as soon I plugged it back in it read the mileage off the LCM and had correct miles again. So far it seems to have fixed my issues of the needles acting up. Downside is that all the other modules now read about 30k miles higher argggg! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Hello,
I have the same exact issue with my 06 4,8is. I already googled a bit and in some cases it seems to be the dsc modules which sends incorrect informations through the CAN Bus or even blocked it. I will ask a specialist for dsc module if he is aware of this kind of issue. But since the cars are now older and the cluster was also used in a e39 M5, there should be more affected units and therefore maybe somebody repaired it diy-method ![]() Any informations for that would be much appreciated. |
