Key here is you gotta do the work yourself or it becomes very costly over the years.

From memory, I don't recall anything here indicating the type transmission you have has a higher than normal failure rate and my perception is that problems with transmissions have had a huge variation in mileage.

Best practice would be to take the vehicle to transmission shop and have it evaluated as part of a PPI. We often hear about valve seal failures on the 4.8 engine, smoking. I would duplicate the circumstances owners have posted to check for symptoms and have a compression and leak down test as part of the PPI. In the end it depends on how much you willing to pay to take the risk stemming from PPI results for his vehicle with it's one-of-a- kind history and mileage.

There is a 4.6/4.8 thread here. Best place to get firsthand input of the positive and negative of 4.8 ownership. I always keep in mind that when one asks any group a question that can be answered negatively the vast majority of the input will be always be negative. The positive in the negative is that it will bring up some potential issues to be sure are checked in PPI so you have no question you are making an informed decision even on the random, one incident inputs.

I think you have to be patient to buy a 4.8 and at least search nationwide to find what is best for you but I know of no reason voiced here to shy away from the purchase of a good 4.8

YouTube the ZF 6hp transmission. It's had several issue.
Remember it's used in jaguars, range rovers, Audis, hyundais, 7, 6, 5, 3series and X5s.
Most of its issues seems to come from failed seals. Which are easily replaced, and low, transmission fluids.
There are a few cases I've heard of with the tranny cooler thermostat failing too.
I was gonna add a second cooler, as I'm having tranny overheat issues.
But I'm gonna try replacing all the solenoids 1st. That's a common fix for them too.
