Steering Angle Sensor help INPA - Info of steering wheel turn is missing
I know it's uncommon for the SAS to go bad. I do see changes when viewing Analog status while turning the wheel, so it appears to be working. Not sure if it has dead spots though. Thoughts? 2001 E53 X5 Here is what I see in INPA for the Steering Angle Sensor Status: |

90 is time-limited passive circuit
104 is steering angle control unit. I vaguely remember TwinsPoppa having the same problem. And he ended up replacing his steering angle sensor. Search around. I found this. https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...al-solved.html

According to the video linked below, the steering angle sensor goes bad with age. Or at least that's my reading of "worn out" contacts... Of course the guy wants to sell his repair kit (which you can't find anywhere, but I disgress)...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQpkLqT68WU Anyway, I have been battling the same issue as you for a while. I am now down to the last suspect: the steering angle sensor. So, I just ordered a new sensor. It should arrive in a couple of days and I will try to do this fix during the weekend. I will take apart both sensors (new and old) and see if I notice a difference in the contacts. Mine is a 2001 BMW X5 3.0i... The sensor is original, so if the dude on the video is right, then it is probably worn out. |

I pulled one from a salvage yard and it fixed the issue. I used Tool 32 to recalibrate the new unit.
Getting the steering column splines back to where they were took me 5 tries. Ha! Also, if the salvage yard vehicle's column is locked, it's a pain to unlock it to get the bolt out. |

What does the ECU do with the steering angle information? What functionality if any does the SAS provide?
I believe I had some steering angle errors in PA Soft a while back but I could never tell that anything was different and had no dash light errors so I basically ignored it.

I have steering angle sensor errors pulled on Carly and on the Foxwell so I will be ordering a new one soon. I'd pull one off of the parts truck but with the hassle to replace one, I'd rather throw a new one in and be done with it.
I'm at 118,000 miles on the original SAS as a reference point.

Ok, the steering angle sensor arrived this morning. So, I took off the old one and installed the new one.
I think I am supposed to do something in INPA or BMW Scanner to configure it, but what is it exactly? I still have the trifecta yellow lights and BMW Scanner continues to show the same exact screen in the attached photo that it has always shown in the steering angle sensor section. The screen has always been peculiar because neither error has ever been marked red/yellow [on the little box on the left of the error text], but BMW Scanner always does that for any other error in the other sections of the tool. I thought this would go away as soon as I installed the new unit, but I guess there's more to do or something else is broken. I also now have INPA working, and I can access the steering angle sensor screens in INPA. Also can access the DSC57 screen (this is a 2001 X5). Any help would be appreciated!

I have the same exact errors,
INPA - Info of steering wheel turn is missing, this is not an error, but rather information inside INPA. Then errors 90 and 104 in DSC57 module. I can clear the errors, but they come back. It started happening around a month ago, when i almost lost my wheel lol, with a stupid silver project control arm. The bolt for the smaller control arm broke in half and my control arm disconnected. Thankfully I had early warnings, and by the time the control arm disconnected, I was going 2kmph... I then towed the vehicle to a garage, who fixed the broken bolt, and at the same time I upgraded to all terrain wheels, which are a lot larger. When I picked up the car, I noticed the intermittent trifecta. I thought maybe the tires were too big and that's why trifecta got lit up, or maybe the rear left speed sensor got ripped or damaged when the control arm came off. But no, the sensor is zip tied to the bigger control arm, which is firmly in place. Also INPA is showing speed on all the tires, so I figure if it was a faulty sensor, I wouldn't be seeing the same speed on all wheels. I then learned that suspension work and alignment job can require a recalibration of the steering sensor. I did that with 3 times lock to lock, and also used Tool32 procedure, but it didn't help. If I clear the errors, and the dash is clean, as soon as I start moving my X5, literally backing up for 2 seconds and then putting it back into Drive, trifecta lights come on. Unfortunately it doesn't seem there's a way to actually test the steering sensor to determine for sure that it's faulty. Not looking forward to replacing it as it got pretty cold now, -15C, not the easiest job lol. I do have a few spares i removed from E46 at junk yard I believe, but I think it's the same part number. Somehow my bmwscanner 1.4 stopped working as well, I suspect the module just died cuz they're low quality... I have the dcan cable for ista, inpa, tool32 etc and they all work, but my bmwscanner stopped working. I ordered a new one and it was going to arrive a couple of days ago, but Canada post went on a nationwide strike Having found this post and 2 people who fixed the issue by changing their steering sensor is giving me some reassurance, so I think all I can do at this point is hope that changing the steering sensor will fix my issue as well. I wonder maybe I can just code the new used sensor to the vehicle with ncs expert, or recalibrate it with Tool32, and not have to do the above linked procedure with bmwscanner 1.4 |
