Key reprogramming

i took my X5 in for service yesterday and while there, i told him about my 2nd key losing the ability to lock and unlock the doors. i gave the the service rep my defective key, he walked out to my X5, pulled it into the service bay, handed me my key back and said it was all set. i was kind of shocked that he was able to do this in the vehicle, i was always under the impression that they had to hook it up to some sort of PC at the shop. he told me that is was just a matter of key positions and buttons that needed to be pressed in order to re-initialize the key. anyone ever heard of this? i posted about this a while back and i'm pretty sure the consensus was to take it to the dealer, but to me, this sounds like something we could do ourselves.
