Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd

I have about 225k miles on the X5. I haven't always driven it regularly, my wife did most of that driving.

Anyway, I think the shifting from 1st to 2nd is quite harsh if you've got any moderate amount of acceleration. Anyone know how to make it less harsh?

All other gear shifts seem normal, it's just that first shift which is not smooth.

Under some acceleration it happens around 3500 rpm, but it happens at about 2700 when driving normal and just below 2000 if I am "Driving Ms. Daisy".
