X5 e53 3.0d April 2006 M57N crankshaft sensor location

Hi guys my car has just stopped running. I put the scanner on it and it showed up crankshaft sensor fail. I’ve searched the web and can’t seem to locate it exactly. There’s a wiring bracket under the starter motor where it shows other model crank sensors are located. The wire to the sensor has sheared off after the plug. It looks like the sensor could be on the rear of the motor inside the transmission bell housing?? If so how do I access it to replace it? I really appreciate all the great advice you guys put up here. Thanks Danny

Most M57 information shows the crank sensor should not be inside the bell housing....

It should be on the left side of the block, towards the rear (B6203)...

And yeah, this looks to be below the starter motor...

But when you look at the part fiche for the later M57TU engine, it seems to be mounted on the rear oil seal frame...

This M57TU oil seal TIS shows it better...

Although even this TIS uses mixed images!

vs

Might have to come up from underneath - maybe pull the plastic transmission shield off - easy to do - as this will give you a better view/access.

Here's what you're looking for...

Thanks Wpoll unfortunately mine is on the oil seal frame and worse still it has snapped the oil seal frame when I was driving 😞 so that means a new oil seal frame replacement including transmission removal. Oh well it’s all experience 🤓
Thank you for the pics and link so now I know what I’ve got ahead of me.
Thanks Danny

Yeah, stink - looks like it's trans out time.

How the heck did the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) get torn out when you were driving? Did it get snagged on a driveshaft or something?

Duno yet. It just stopped on the highway whilst towing a horse float at 110km/hr. I saw the wire going into the bellhousing and after I took the starter off I could see the broken seal frame. I don’t know what caused it to break. It will take me a while to getting around to stripping it all down to repair it. Looks like I’m driving the old vx commodore around for a while. Thank you soo much for your help. The link you sent was great. Have a great day

It looks like the flywheel snagged it and tore it clean off!

Did you find the missing sensor and bracket (part)?
