SRS Module Change Out

I keep getting an SRS light. When I run the codes is tells me it is driver's side stage I fault. Anyone know if this indicates and issue with the SRS control module or perhaps the driver's side impact sensor? I've read some on here about needing to get exactly the right module, so yesterday I opened up my center console (what a major PITA that is ) to see if I could get a look at the module. Well, unlike some of the Youtube stuff I've found it appears the module is buried deep beneath the fan for the rear seat air. It looked like a half a days job to get things pulled apart enough to actually access the module. So, I put things back together as I needed the truck to get to work today.

Anyone DIY this swap? Any tricks for making it an easier job? Any way to find out the exact correct part number? I have read here that some have had to go through several before they got the right one. Given what a PITA this job is I'd like to avoid doing it more than once. Thanks in advance.

This would be a good example of how useful DIS v57 can be. It sounds like you are reading OBD codes? Any BMW specific tool would probably give you a better description of the code and DIS would probably even give you a wiring diagram of the related circuit and a diagnostic and repair strategy. If I had to only the information you have given to work from though I would suspect a clock spring problem.

Driver's side means specifically to do with the steering wheel airbag or driver's seat as the driver could be on either side.

And yes, I just check the wiring diagram and crash sensors are referred to as left and right, the active components driver and passenger.

SRS module is low and back I thought I've seen video of people accessing from the right side after removing the panle. The seat is onky held by four bolts and if your srs is outta whack nothing to lose disconnecting the cables under the seat.

I recently changed my seat bottom and don't think I had to reset my airbag system after and I didn't disconnect battery just had car off.

You are generally OK to unplug SRS components when working on the car as long as you DON'T turn on the ignition while SRS plugs etc. are undone.

What makes this hard when working on doors etc. is that you often need to put power on to move a window up/down or test a speaker/lock etc.

In those cases, you'll need an SRS reset - or work with all the SRS components still connected. Such fun...

When I do inside door work I flip the airbag 180° and use one of the original screws to hold it out of the way (it sticks out past the back of the door but clear all the inside access holes). The seat has both the butt sensor and the belt tensioner in the SRS system.

I had to swap my seat bottom because the recliner gear stripped (with the seat full forward that was fun). Then I spilled brake fluid on it praise Jesus that I didn't already put in the new seat bottom!

I've replaced my steering wheel and have disconnected the airbag and never had any airbag light come on either but of course I did not start the car with it off.

I have done this task, not an easy one!
Disconnect battery
Remove both driver and passenger’s seats
Remove lower panels, below the center console, from both sides
There are 3 nuts holding down the module
Undo them and SRS can be removed

In my case I successfully replaced my SRS airbag module with an earlier version (I made sure the module had the right type of wiring and connection).
It works fine....

I'm using a Schwaben, BMW specific scanner. I'll check the specific code the next time it throws one.
