Some questions about my X5

My new-to-me 2005 X5 3.0i has 290K miles on it... Some questions related to that, some not. I've searched and found many answers but not to the questions below:

1. At this mileage I'm thinking a little thicker oil (than 5-30) is in order. Thoughts? I plan on 10-40 winter and maybe 20-40 summer (I'm in a mild climate). Depends on what oil consumption pops up and if he makes any noises I don't like!

2. Stereo is OK, but what do you use to integrate your phones? or is it even possible? Mine does not have a phone dock. I had a Tune2Air from Bovee in my Benz, it worked well.

3. Trans, diffs and transfer case maintenance are unknown (former owner was a mechanic though) I'm thinking change them all. Red Line 75-90 for the diffs, BMW magic fluid for the transfer case and Dex 6 (?) for the trans.

4. Coding. I have both an iCarly and a Foxwell NT510 on the way. I have looked over the Carly site about coding but see some folks on here have "coded" items that are not listed or available to Carly. Where are these coming from and how are they coded?

5. I don't have (can't find) a fuse diagram and I want to disable the pano roof. Are there other users of this fuse or just the roof? What number is it and where is it?

In time I'm sure I will have other questions but these are the important ones at the moment. Any and all help is appreciated. TIA.

If you want to go a bit thicker then I would go with 10w30. Usually on sale and narrower viscosity usually means less additives to gum up.
I would agree with DEX 6 and the magic transfer case fluid especially for xdrive.
Royal purple is nice for the diffs because of it's purple color.
AFAIK regarding coding

NSC Expert will give you almost all coding options.
NSC Expert Dummy adds a layer that makes NSC Expert easier to use but limits some options.
ICarly and most others are easier yet but limit options even more.

First of all, welcome to the family.

1. At this mileage I'm thinking a little thicker oil (than 5-30) is in order. Thoughts? I plan on 10-40 winter and maybe 20-40 summer (I'm in a mild climate). Depends on what oil consumption pops up and if he makes any noises I don't like!

That is some amazing mileage. Be grateful you have the 3.0L, they seem to run forever. I can't give you qualified advice, I only have 163,000 miles on mine. I know a lot of the guys over on E46 Fanatics site swear buy Shell Rotella oil on the high mileage engines.

2. Stereo is OK, but what do you use to integrate your phones? or is it even possible? Mine does not have a phone dock. I had a Tune2Air from Bovee in my Benz, it worked well.

I have the Bovee 1000 Tune2Air A2DP running in my X5 now. You will need a Dice iPod adapter and depending on whether or not you have DSP you might need the DSP interface. The Bovee plugs right into the old 30 pin iPod connector.

3. Trans, diffs and transfer case maintenance are unknown (former owner was a mechanic though) I'm thinking change them all. Red Line 75-90 for the diffs, BMW magic fluid for the transfer case and Dex 6 (?) for the trans.

Ask the PO if he had ever serviced it and do it with those miles if he did not. You definitely have the GM gearbox so Dex 6 is the correct fluid. The diffs are a simple change and your choice of Redline 75/90 is fine. The transfer case oils changed on 2004 and later with X-Drive so I can not help you there but here is a decent link to read.

4. Coding. I have both an iCarly and a Foxwell NT510 on the way. I have looked over the Carly site about coding but see some folks on here have "coded" items that are not listed or available to Carly. Where are these coming from and how are they coded?

The Foxwell is a great tool but the Carly is fairly limited on the older generation BMW's. (E53, E46) There are several tools we all use here and Foxwell is one of them. We will also use BMW Tools (INPA, NCS Expert, etc.) and also BMW Scanner 1.4. They all have good features and some do things others can not. I personally use BMW Tools and BMW Scanner 1.4

5. I don't have (can't find) a fuse diagram and I want to disable the pano roof. Are there other users of this fuse or just the roof? What number is it and where is it?

Panoramic Sunroof fuse is 58 in the glove compartment. Another decent post with fuse layout in glove comartment.

80stech and overboost, thank you very much for the prompt responses. Looks like I am headed in the right direction with my choices (except maybe Carly...).

Overboost: Regarding my stereo, it has a "DSC off" button on the lowest row. It also has a "Business CD", whatever that is...

Thanks again to all

You have DSP and that will limit your options to go A2DP Bluetooth streaming. You could go with a BMW Aux input but this will be a wired connection.

As far as the way my setup is, the Dice company sold to AudioVox and I believe they rebranded the product as MediaBridge. All of them have been discontinued unfortunately.

Most guys on here are now going to aftermarket radio head units but be mindful in your search you need DSP compatibility.

How would I use the BMW AUX input? Would I just need a cable from my phone to the aux input? Doesn't my X have some BlueTooth capability? Can any of that function with an iPhone 7? Or will I be better off just using the speakerphone on my iPhone? I would like to be able to listen to my spotify though...

Regarding the xDrive fluid change, in theory you are supposed to reset the transfer case module (VTG) oil wear adaptations after changing the fluid - some folk do and some don't. Jury is out as to how important that bit is. I did the reset when I changed my xDrive fluid a few weeks back - using BMW DIS but I think the Foxwell unit can do this reset too.

Your factory Bluetooth (if equipped) is for hands free calling only. You can not stream music from a Bluetooth device to the system. You can go out and check to see if you have Bluetooth via your phone. Go out and turn the car ignition to position 2. The factory Bluetooth will be in pairing mode for 2 minutes. Open your Bluetooth menu on your phone and look for devices. If you see a BMWxxxx broadcasting you just need the pairing pin code found on the module label.

As far as the aux input, you need this harness and there are several videos for the install. A simple 3.5mm cable from phone headphone jack to aux input jack.

In quickly reading the box and some of the directions (it came in the mail today) I see where it resets the transmission adaptations but I haven't yet found them for the transfer case. I hope it does as I'd like to do it, especially at my mileage. Thanks for the input.

I have to go out and polish my headlights some more (another story...), I'll check for the BT capability then. I read somewhere here that the BT code was the last 5 of the VIN, not so? Where is the module I need the number from? You have been extremely helpful, feel free to ignore me for a while, I'll get by!
