You're right - RealOEM shows a sheet metal screw (#9) and a speed nut (#13) in the rear position. Not sure how this works, as on mine (at least, when I got it) there were OEM expanding rivets in that location - through both parts #5 and #6 and into a hole on the the subframe.

But I guess whatever works to secure it.

As for screws and bits missing well not gonna lose sleep over it, besides the realoem site shows slight variation...if you see my 'screw' on bottom right photo it is not the same as the one on realoem site maybe got my wires crossed in another post you say it is an expanding rivet i am looking for, pic on bottom left is where its missing on the other side....I am just gonna try to screw in a plastic screw i have handy and put a largish washer on it...thanks again you have saved me embarrassment of going at mr.annakis today and accusing him of puting parts he took off back on wrong...so owe ya one He will be giving my old denso back.....very tempted ot put it in the dishwasher to clean (apart from solenoid) and idea if its a bad idea?
Do you mind helping me out with a part number for number 7? When I look at RealOEM number 7 is not called out in the only location I can find it shown. Neither of my X5's has this shield. I'm thinking lazy mechanics may have removed and not reinstalled in the past. Thanks!

Then his cover is not installed correctly. The tabs in my picture are exactly where they are meant to be. If you pull the shield off - and you will need axle stands to do this - it is very obvious how the front of the shield fits to the rear of the reinforcing plate.

Time to move on - your mechanic got it right.

The part number for mine 51717141495 but note that it's an LCI with an auto trans - it seem that this panel may not have been fitted to the earlier 3.0i cars...

Glad it was just water....

Keep in mind that RealOEM (or even the dealer parts folk) aren't perfect and these cars underwent many revisions during their model life. Not all the parts diagrams are 100% correct for all cars...

Got my old starter back in bits today, and also got one of the lads at the shop with my aid to take off the tray...those tabs prevented it sliding forward enough for the securing bolts/holes to line up....so seems it was right all along as per your pic....he also replaced missing screw bolt and installed one of those plastic ones you referred too...another saga over....hope this christmas is car trouble free as over the last few years its either battery dying or cv boot splitting or sunroof jammin....all good in the end

see below link and the pic...in yellow circle I don't see the bit we have on the 3.0d ....mind you if it is too much of a rip off to buy, am sure IF you have the holes in the subframe to secure it to you could make one out aluminium and/or plastic or even plexiglass...
