I'm in a mess....help

Hello, I was carrying out some much needed rear suspension maintenance yesterday including rear arm and bottom link/Bush replacement all went ok until I came to replace the aging battery. My friend had the diagnostic port plugged in and convinced me he could fool the ECU into not resetting during the battery swap. It failed so at the moment I'm stuck with a car that starts but I have drivers window down and tailgate not fully shut and the key fob does nothing. I can't put the window up or lock/unlock the car. It seems like because of the tailgate and window positions I can't reprogram the key fob. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance. Sorry it's a 2004 e53 3.0d 218bhp.

Don't believe that an 04 needs to register the battery.

Undo battery and short the + & - cable together and leave for a couple of hours then reinstall battery and run a check for codes and do any resets needed.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have an OBD2 reader so may have to visit a garage to do the resets.

Just buy the Foxwell NT-510 as it's less than $200 USD and you'll spend at least that at the dealership...

Disconnecting the battery. Touching the pos and neg wires together while battery is disconnected and then reconnecting the battery afterwards should fix it. Its just "jammed" from glitching when you connected the battey the first time. Or you broke the bst connector on the positive post.

Car starts, BST is fine. You can reset the DME by unplugging the battery, I suspect when you connected the new battery you touched the terminal multiple times sending a spike or two of voltage.

Get a scanner you need one for working informed and they will save your bacon frequently. After weeks of research I picked the foxwell NT510 though I think the 520 does the same jobs.

You need to have the doors all shut and I believe unlocked I don't think window cares to reprogram the key fob.

I do think the hatch must be latched.

Try to roll the window up by holding the key in the driver's door to the lock position. If that doesn't work do you hear the window try to move or motor sounds you may have a regulator problem or a control module problem (common failure is water gets in corrodes the relay contacts)

Many thanks for your advice. The battery trick didn't work. After a lot of invest I found the fuse for the OBD was blown. I replaced that , cleared down all the codes and did a key fob reprogram. All is now working. Thanks again
