Jimmy -

I'll circle back if I can remember what root cause was or resolution, but I had similar tailgate issues. You would literally hear the latch click/click and poof, it releases. It would cycle on it's own. There was no consistency on when it would happen.

I've had it happen also and mine was the little L-shaped piece that operates the micro switch had popped over too far and would cause it be pressing the switch almost to the point of activation making bumps and just looking at it cross eyed causing it to open

I kinda - want to say it was the tailgate that fixed but but I really can't remember. Sorry. Wish I would help. The worst is when it opens on the freeway. I do recall buying a new tailgate and having it painted, but I think this was after I had a custom camera put in.

Inside the center piece insert where the license plate lights and the push button pad. The L piece reaches from the pad to the switch.

+1 on the lever to the switch. I sensed it was a physical hardware problem but first just thought it was a problem with the internal microswitch, I forgot about the lever that pushes the switch.
