swapping my 4.4i for a 4.6is?

So there is a gentleman who has an 02 4.6is in imola red here in Reno nv, he's owned it since new and its in decent shape besides a missing rear flared wheel arch and a small piece of the rear diffuser on the side. around 140,000 miles. I am thinking about selling my 03 4.4i for it as he said he'll sell it to me for whatever its worth but what would be a fair price to ask for the 4.6is?

Without knowing anything about the vehicle besides model year, trim and mileage.

Somewhere around $7k?

Maintenance records will go a huge way, especially if he is original owner. If it's clean, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted roughly $9-10k for it.

He has all maintenance records for it so that's a huge plus. still on the original timing guides and transmission though. I just miss my 4.6is so much and this one would be a great project for me.

Have you already done guides and transmission service on your own? It'd be a money drain to chomp into one that hasn't had one or the other done. I just bought one that will be draining me for awhile. But, if it's what you want you know the deal going in.

If you do have guides done, perhaps he'd be willing to trade - sounds odd to say - but with a little cash. IDK, tough one.

Im about to shuck out for the 4.6is transmission rebuild to the tune of $2500 or so. I've been in E38's for 15 years, so I know guides are coming - or should be done - especially on a 4.6is given the rarity, speaking of I've learned my X5 is 1 of 27 in the world Dinan modified. So, i feel like I have to get it right for my own sake, and because it's the right thing to do.

I also messaged BMW Classic and they have directed me to BMW archives for production numbers on the 4.6is, it will be interesting to see what they say or if they will disclose that to me. Their Twitter account admin shot me down and said it was against policy to disclose.

At that mileage and missing bits I'd stick with the devil you know and wait unless he is at a fire sale price

My 03 4.4i is on its original trans at 163,000 miles and it shifts perfectly. It has had 3 services in its life with ZF lifeguard fluid. That's what I attribute to it lasting this long. The guides are also original on my 4.4i but I have every record since new indicating oil changes every 5k miles since mid 2004 however if I keep it I will do guides and vanos rebuild. I'll have to drive the 4.6is to see but even if it needs the work mine doesn't its still a rare E53 and I like you 740ilDuke feel obligated to bring it back to almost new condition.

Sub-$10k is probably what you are looking at. I sold my 4.6iS Oct'17 for $10k with 133k miles. Market really hasn't changed too much on them

You seem to have already made your mind up but to bring a 140k mi x5 back to like new (my definition may be different than yours) the juice doesnt seem worth the squeeze unless your turning all the wrenches yourself and can find those missing parts free or inexpensively.

I guess I would start by defining "all" maintenance records he has and proceed from there if thats just oil changes and air filter swaps...then you need to make a decision.

Jus my .02. Good luck

I finally drove the 4.6is today and it needs some work. The engine also is making some noise that stays constant with RPM. its not the thing chain guides as I know what those sound like, it sounds like something within the motor like a lifter or rod bearings.
