I bought a stock 4.8is resonator and will not be opening it as I will be replacing my X-pipe with it.

But shinning the light through it it's the same design as the 4.6is but with 60mm pipes on both sides. This is also why the flanges where it meets the mufflers is clocked differently due to the size.

Why are you ditching the X-pipe in favor of the stock resonator? I was just thinking about replacing the stock resonator with an h-pipe personally. It has to go to the exhaust shop... because reasons... and while it was there I was thinking of losing the weight of the OE resonator in favor of the H-pipe.

Bought the car with straight pipes.

The volume was perfect. Loud enough to enjoy but not overly loud cruising on the highway. Didn't have it long enough to notice any droning so can't comment there.

But hated the unrefined tone and felt it didn't match the car. Also during idle you can hear the unbalanced pulses so you hear like this empty puff making it sound like you have low compression. This airy puffy sound is also more pronounced lugging along parking lots when you hardly reving the car. I hate this sound on all my V8 cars.

So then I went with an x-pipe based on all the raving reviews of other members here. Big mistake as far as volume. I lost all volume but gained a better tone but still a bit raspy. Also cured the low compression sound I hated.

But the more I drove it on the highway I found a droning spot and is now driving me nuts. On the highway around 50-60 mph probably in 6th gear if you try to accelerate before it downshifts there is drone, it's bearable but on long trips I'm not trying to floor it all the time.

So I met with another member with a stock 4.8is exhaust and to me it sounded the best. It has a much deeper tone and loudness wise it was almost exactly the same, x-pipe was slightly louder, marginally. But it has the best tone out of all the other setups I've heard.

So this is why I decided to try the the stock resonator and if I want to change the sound, replacing the mufflers is the way to go.

I plan on buying a used set of 4.8is mufflers to chop it up and try all different types of mufflers till I find the sweat spot.

On my mustang I must have gone through 10-15 different exhaust setups until I was satisfied lol

I hear you on the exhaust changing. I am still working on dialing mine in and as I said it's going back to the exhaust shop for an h-pipe or x-pipe. Haven't decided yet. Know the benefits of each? I think an X-pipe flows better but the h-pipe smooths it out more? Been so long since looking into crossover pipes back in my muscle car days.

Ah yes, mustang exhausts. I had an 01 GT and got lucky to nail the note on my first try. BBK long tubes, X pipe (mac maybe?), to a set of cat back Spintech side exit mufflers a la the 2000 Cobra R. Sounded AMAZING! My favorite exhaust sound of any car I have owned.

H pipe delivers a lower exhaust note
X pipe delivers a higher raspy tone.

Difference in HP/TQ is minimal with either being better depending on the application.

Long tubes changes exhaust not considerably. I changed the headers on my the mustang several times as well lol. Here is a pic of mine:


Forced induction also changes exhaust note as everything is moving faster.

^ VERY nice. Mine was more show than go... but I enjoyed it. Had all the bolt ons and was my daily driver for about 6 years.

Fixed the image in that previous post. I guess Gotstang no longer allows hot linking.
