I took my covers off when we were replacing chain guides. Simply used oven degreaser, then sandblaster and finally clear coat. Looks classy IMHO.

Did you outgas the valve covers before painting them/clearing? This needs to be done to assure that the finish will last.

Yeah, I pre-baked the parts at 500F, a temperature that is a bit higher than the cure temperature for about 15 min after sandblasting. This drove the bulk of the entrapped gas out, which is more than enough in my case.
