How Long for a Coil Failure to trigger a SES
In no special order. battery had a short. Bench tested clean but for sure, after replacing battery, the V issues I was seeing disappeared. New reman trans. Initial diag seemed to be V issues but upon further test drive, it was def. the tran. Fast forward to post reman trans. Got a heavy shudder and initial thought was bad TQC on it. More driving, pointed to misfires. Nothing on the cluster, but after some test driving, saw the SES blip about a couple times. Couple post test drives and nary a blip on the cluster though. Car was driving like a wet dog. Got it read with real scan tools, confirmed bad coil. Anyhow, new coils and plugs in, and power is back where it should be. How many misfires is required before the SES lights comes on. Ha, I was saying if she still drives like a wet dog, going to need to add a smoke evap tool to the stash of tools |

There is a secret formula for # misfires in a minute or such to trip a code and kick on limp home mode.
Usually you can reset the code and immediately disable limp home mode

Can't wait to get my pasoft working. The X is not my daily so its subtle issues that don't generate lights trickle down slowly to my Wiki. As she's aging, I just need some more visuals. Heh, for the stuff I was feeling under the throttle, I was kinda surprised nary a cel. There are times it was fine with a misfire here and there and other times where for sure, you will mash it and it would be no bueno

I would get cel/SES occasionally with mine, it would usually happen at start and then the limo mode stayed until I reset it. Happened about 3 times over a year.
Then wife's started to do it but much more regularly but when code was on one cylinder regularly I went to swap coil packs to see if the trouble migrate but I pulled the plug at the same time it was horrible after less than 30,000 mi. I swapped her plugs back to OE brand and problem vaporized. Spark fuel air that's as simple as it gets. It's nearly impossible to get a misfire from air problem just lean/rich codes so misfire is almost always fuel or spark. Clean/swap coil or injector to see if a problem cylinder will migrate to a different cylinder and make sure your fuel pressure maintains under heavy throttle. The computer does not keep track of fuel pressure it assumes it's always exactly 50psi. It meters the fuel using milliseconds of injector timing and will use the wrong amount of fuel if the pressure is other than 50psi.
