Universal Soft Close Doors

Thought this was interesting. They used an e53 to demonstrate:

https://www.facebook.com/23035746596...6171132415853/

Would be a nice feature so you don't slam your door so you don't break your windor regulator clips lol

Now make it pop open to not break your door handle carrier!

I mean, yes awesome, but at $700 (4 doors). And obvious body mod. Maybe not

But in a sense the devise is absorbing a large majority of the force now.

Not to mention you have to tell everyone every single time.

I currently tell them when passengers close my hatch and also tell them to pull up the door handle rather than pull out.

One more thing to screw up on a door system that is going to grenade on you no matter what. I'll pass

Now if they come out with a simple swap to convert to door handles that open out and not upward I might be interested. I never understood that design on suv doors (sav or whatever you want to call it).

The vehicle is taller than a car so lifting the handle makes no sense.

Because they used it on the much higher volume 3 series... which makes sense to pull up a little. Parts bin sharing to cut costs at its best.

Edit: Someone call OSHA... that guy wasn't wearing a shirt in the workshop.

Soft close doors can also be dangerous if one does something mindless...or if you have small children.

There was an adult owner that sued BMW because he lost the tip (1st joint) of his finger when it got snapped off in a soft close door. The owners manual has a warning to not leave fingers etc in the path of the door. He exited his BMW and turned his back to the door with his hand/fingers holding on to the edge of the door.

So just a note to those that may have this feature now, or may get it in a future purchase...remember to stay cognizant & keep fingers/hands/other body parts clear of the closing path of the door...because once it starts to close...it will not reverse even if something is in its path. (perhaps BMW will change this in the future...but for now...it doesn't).

Here's a link to the story: https://nypost.com/2018/03/25/my-70k...-off-my-thumb/

From the e46? It doesn't look the same as the e53 though...

You are right, checked RealOEM. They ARE different. Very similar according to pictures and do use the same slight pull up motion on the door carrier. That's what threw me.

Darwin's theory proven correct time and time again. Maybe he'll make an appearance in this year's Darwin Awards.

That's a bit unfair. It's human nature to become comfortable around unsafe things. It's a cognitive bias called the 'Normalcy Bias'

I don't disagree. But there are also things called accidents. This incident falls squarely into that category. I'm willing to bet that individuals have lost finger tips from closing regular car doors on themselves (house doors too for that matter). The litigation, and his "woe is me," reaction to the accident seem way over the top.
