X5 4.8is vd Cayenne GTS

So, I currently have a 2008 Cayenne GTS - and let me be clear I love it... BUT current work situation has forced me to have to adjust my commute to close to 100 miles a day.

Besides the 14mpg I am getting in the GTS, 100 miles a day is destroying the GTS, and the increased miles will kill resale value.

The only other thing I am considering is a 4.8is, 2005 with about 140k or 2004 with 120k (but either the valve seal issue or the cvc tube issue).

How do the 4.8's hold up to daily abuse, or should I look towards getting a daily beater, and calling it even?

My concern is to get rid of the GTS, and my payment and buy the 4.8 outright and not stress about resale.

What's everyone's experience with high mile 4.8's?

I'd get a 2006 3.0. The M54 motor is practically bullet proof. I have over 227,000 miles on mine. They get better mileage than the V8's as well. Not great, just better.

I think you need to look at a few different things here. Really depends on what you are looking for.

Fuel efficiency - 4.8iS won't yield better MPG but if paying for gas isn't an issue then lets move on
Comfort - 4.8iS is very comfortable on long drives, and has enough space to carry things in the trunk or other passengers
Power - V8, similar to your GTS but not nearly as fast
Maintenance - need to be careful here. If you don't find a good example you could be spending thousands on repairs. Suspension, motor, cooling system issues most notably. Then your common window regulators and carriers.

Not sure what your budget is either. Have you looked into E70 Diesels? They are fantastic on highway drives and get great MPG. I used to own one and would get nearly 600 miles to the tank on the highway

^ I second that. As an owner of both, the e70 diesel is quieter, more modern, and easily gets 25mpg highway. More can be had depending on driving style. Just last week I got ~25mpg loaded with 6 20" tires and 4 wheels from the 4.8is. The e70 is larger and carries more too. Give them a look if you are okay with diesel.

I'm more than ok with diesel... I have a 2013 and 2015 on my radar now... just concerned about reliability near 100k on those. It seems like the better choice.

certainly doesn't have the street cred the 4.8is or the GTS has! LOL

True. The e70 blends in like Waldo.

Reliability I would put at no worse than the 4.8is. 3.0 e53 is king there. The wife's x35d just crossed 156000 miles. Owned it about 2 years and spent about $1200 on maintenance doing my own work.

If the E70 you are looking at has the M57TU2 engine, they are very reliable. They have a few minor week points but nothing like valve stem seals or timing chains etc. - just glow plugs, engine breather (like a CCV) and of course a couple of turbos that need decent oil at all times.

But I doubt there are any M57-based diesels in the USA - I'm pretty sure BMW moved up to the N57 series for the USA-release.

Don't know a lot about the later N57 diesel engine except that its very similar to the M57 - the changes are focussed on emission reduction and output power increases (225kW and 600N.m).

The N57s smaller sister, the N47, HAS seen a LOT of timing chain failures...

I don't think this has been an issue with the larger N57 engines - it has been suggested that the lower gearing on the cams results in less stress on the chain.

Good fun engines, these big turbo I6 diesels - so much torque!!

I believe all US x35d's (e70) are m57.
