Hi
I've got a ex BMW mechanic that does my car and I'm seeing him Monday so I will ask a few questions/describe symptoms for you if you like (not in VIC)...? RE the parts, Clickable Automotive are very good if you can give them the part numbers. They are in Melbourne. Cheers

Thanks for the response. Problem only occurs when accelerating from low revs (eg approx 1500 revs). Engine falters and check engine light starts to flash. Sometimes it goes out and sometimes it stays on. If you stop and turn the engine off you can sometimes get it to go out. My scanner shows a 29CC (misfire on cylinder 1) and 29CD (misfire on many cylinders). Signs of oiling on both spark plug and injector. Have swapped plugs, coils and injectors but codes stay the same. Have done a compression test and a leak down test but cylinder 1 results normal. I have used INPA and the readings on cylinder 1 seem normal. I can drive the car and avoid the fault if I keep the revs up (above 2000 revs) by using manual mode. Cars idles well but sometimes hiccups after running for a couple of minutes but does not generate error. Seems to be more susceptible when cold. Local indie thinks it is eccentric shafts and/or intermediate levers but I think he may be being influenced by reported faults in earlier models. Don’t think he is interested in proceeding to fix the problem. He has told me he thinks the parts alone would cost about $8500.
I will try Clickable for eccentric shafts just in case. Have had difficulty finding them. Lithuania and US sometimes have them for about $1500 each. |

There is an Australian guy on You Tube (BMW dealer tech) who's published very good videos on E53 repair & maintenance (VERY helpful one about changing the air filter for a 3.0d car). Look for him ....

Have you considered the camshaft position sensors? Seems to crop up in a lot of misfire symptoms?

I was thinking that that might throw up a different code than the ones I have been getting.

Hi
Spoke with my indi today re your issues. He says he would start with the vanos solenoids as they affect the timing when engine is idling or cold start. There are 4 of them and the small holes get clogged up. It's a DIY to pull them out and clean them. Then he would look at cam position sensors before spending any money or looking into levers.

Thank you LVR and your indi, I think you may have fixed my problem. I removed the right hand side Vanos solenoids (consistent with error on cylinder 1) and flushed them out using carby cleaner. Until I took them out I didn't realise there was a fine mesh screen on them which would be very easy to block. The solenoids looked clean enough but apparently they were not. There may be a slight hesitation on heavy acceleration (I can't remember what it was like originally) but there is no sign of a warning light and the car is quite drivable (at last!).
