Scanner to Calibrate Steering Angle Sensor

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to find someone in the DFW Metroplex that has a Foxwell NT510 BMW scanner tool so that I can calibrate my steering angle sensor (SAS). Depending on distance, willing to meet up for 1 time use of your scanner.

Or, any other scanner that can perform this SAS function.

I'll check with my Indy later today on whether he has one.

I'm in a jam with my E90 after doing a heated steering wheel upgrade mod. The lock to lock steering wheel turning has not cleared the code and I still have a Trifecta of codes going. I'll ultimately buy one but wanted to try to resolve this quickly as opposed to waiting for shipping.

My Creator 310 tool is only able to tell me that the SAS needs "calibration" but cannot perform this function. Time to sell the Creator 310 and invest in the next level.

https://www.youcanic.com/guide/bmw-s...or-calibration

Sorry to take this off platform to an E90 issue but the expertise here has always been awesome as regards scan tools and coding.

PM me if you can help.

Thanks,

Mike

The SAS can self-calibrate by simply turning the steering lock-lock a couple times. No need for a different tool. If that doesn't work, you may have a bad SAS (LEW module in BMWese).

Thanks for the thoughts.

I have tried the self-calibration lock-to-lock several times but to no avail.

The NT510 has a specific calibration function in its software.

The code I am getting says "SAS needs calibration."

However, on my Creator 310 scanner I can look at live data and can see the angle of the steering wheel and can see it at 0° when dead straight ahead and then it changes correctly depending on the steering wheel movement.

So, it would appear the SAS is outputting good data but the main brain is not seeing it.

It won't self calibrate after replacement. It has to be coded to the vehicle. The Foxwell will do that.

Thanks for confirming that I'm on the right track with a Foxwell

Right, but I didn't read anywhere that he replaced it. It sounds like it might be working just fine, but the issue is simply with his Creator tool. Just a thought.

Yes, I changed the clock spring to a heated steering wheel unit along with a heated wheel and this is where things went to Trifecta land on DSC and 4x4 and ABS brake.

All these sub systems rely on the SAS to tell them which way the wheels are headed.

But is the SAS the same one that was on the car previously?

I am assuming that the SAS is embedded in the clock spring housing, so yes, I did change the clock spring in the vehicle. The heated steering wheel clock spring has extra wiring to feed the heated wheel.

wpoll will become famous soon enough
SAS isn't in the clock spring housing - it's further down the shaft.
