Planning for the future. DD Retirement & Rebuild.

So I have been doing a lot of thinking here lately about the duration of owning my X5 and made a decision I think will be for the best.

You guys have been an immeasurable amount of help over the last few years and I cannot express my thanks enough.

However, in a few months time, I will give my 2002 X5 3.0i with 256k miles, a retirement from being my daily driver and end up doing a total rebuild down the road.

Honestly, this car is too good to let go of for a number of reasons...it's perfect for long trips, family outings and just cruising -- all around, the X5 is an amazing vehicle, but you can't work on it going down the road.

It needs some TLC that I just can't give it when I have a family to take care of and need it to be ready to go at a moments notice or for work, so the big projects that I have been meaning to get around to doing... are starting to show and it's putting more wear and stress on the car than it need be.

So in the coming months I will be a little bit less active, but I will return, with DIY's galore when it's time to start the rebuilding.

Thanks again everyone, will catch you again soon.

I support that thought process completely. I'm looking into how to transition to our next car/s and thing of either turning a current car into a parts car or just like you describe put it on blocks and do a deep refurbish.

It's a toss up on a per car basis I would imagine, just depends on what you know needs to be fixed versus, how much work you've put into it already.

I see X5's come up all the time with similar millage and looking relatively good on the inside, but it's the service history that makes me jittery... because it's not there. With the help of you guys here I was able to get some peace of mind though, only 1800$ in the car including purchase price, so it's been good to me.

I've found this neat little trick with the "my garage" portion of a certain car report site that has the word fax in it's name... that allows you to enter the VIN of any vehicle you're thinking about buying and it circumvents having to pay for the report. I'm sure they'll fix it eventually, but it's saved me from making some horrible decisions when purchasing a vehicle for the wife or myself.

(I didn't want to use the name of it in context because they'll find out! Haha)

If you know whats been done to a car, keep it, use it as a base, if you feel it's worth the work, but if you know the value of repairs will out weigh the actual value... it might be time to look for another one to use as a base and use your current one for parts.

They certainly don't make them like they used to, these turn of the century vehicles will run forever if you take care of them. It's just being able to take the time to do so and balancing everything out so that it last for years to come.

I got a lucky break on the transitioning on the daily driver portion for me at least...well as lucky as suffering a back injury is from an accident for a meager cash sum in some months. But my wife's '99 ML320 with 100k miles decided to make some new gremlins.. crippling half of the onboard computers when the battery shorted out. So we're sharing the X5.. doubling the stress I intended to put on it. Huzzah!
