Picking muffler replacement: Mufflers or Resonators?

My 4.6 already has the middle resonator replaced with an X-pipe. It made the sound a little more aggressive, but only by a small amount.

I've found THE sound I want, with this fellow's 4.8: https://youtu.be/xx3kq3vRxgQ
His setup:
  • Stock center resonator
  • Rear mufflers replaced with Vibrant 1792 bottle resonators.

My worry with getting the Vibrant bottle resonators is, since I already have my center resonator removed, my X5 will be too loud. The video above still has the stock centre resonator.

Btw, the reason I'm leaning towards a resonator is I understand it doesn't necessarily make things quieter, but it cuts the high frequency pitch out of the exhaust note. The video above is deep, vs the raspy straight pipe sound which I don't like. I've found many Hellcat/SRT8 owners replace the stock mufflers with these resonators and it sounds great.

I'm leaning towards a HD version of the resonator above, to replace my mufflers. I figure since the HD resonator will be quieter then the resonators used in the video above, they'll help offset the fact that my center resonator is already removed, providing a similar sound to the video above. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...K6Y9EEQB&psc=1

Any input is appreciated before I pull the trigger. I'll def post before and after videos.

I test drove a 4.8is with stock resonator and just muffler deleted on the back. The drone was pretty much every where, unbearable.

yes, I'm not going straight pipe. But, I believe 2 of HD resonators i linked above in place of the stock muffler, will provide a better sound then the stock middle resonator and muffler a delete like you experienced.

You have to try it and hear it in person. A lot of exhaust videos are very different in person. All depends on how it was recorded.

For the x5 and my mustang I swear I spent hours listening to clips and when I tried the same setup it was never really the same in person. Been through like 10 different exhaust combination from headers, cats, midpipes and mufflers until I was happy lol.

The 4.8is I ended up buying one that came with just the stock resonator deleted and had two separate pipes in place. It sounded good, volume was perfect for a DD, no drone but it sounded very unrefined and raspy.

After watching a million videos of x-pipe setups I gave it a try and WTF it was quiet as fuck and was pretty disappointing and actually got drone on certain rpms.

Never had the stock setup and after meeting another member with stock exhaust I decided to replace the x-pipe with a stock resonator.

I'm happy for now as it is very deep and throaty and exactly the same volume as the x-pipe if not slightly louder.

Eventually I plan on just changing the mufflers instead and keeping the stock resonator in place. Maybe Eisenmann or Super Sprint. Aftermarket muffler choices are pretty limited unless you chop it up and weld your own.
