E53 4.6is engine Timing help - loose cam shaft bolt

Hey guys. I had all kinds of code faults on my second bank not firing etc so I pulled the valve covers to find the bolt that holds the cam position sensor loose. The chains are tight but I have to re-time the engine and then set the cam position sensor plate prior to tightening up. If you guys have links with pics to where my cam lobes should be sitting, I can work off of that to re-align them. Thanks for your help on this.

Lucky for you your timing isn't wrong just the reluctor ring is out of whack. Just the last step of setting the timing is getting the steel plate the cam position sensor reads to be at the right position. The cams are locked with a much stronger screw.

Do you guys happen to know of any threads posted on the step by step instructions on what to line up in order to check the timing before tightening up those cam shaft bolts?

You need some timing tools to hold the cams at TDC and other set to exactly position the reluctor wheel aka "impulse sending wheel".

I wouldn't want to attempt guesswork timing. You don't need GAS brand timing tools. The cam lock tools are very simple I'd bet somebody sells on eBay cheap. The GAS solution for the timing wheel is a better design than BMW's and I highly recommend it. You can use for 1-4 or 5-8 you only technically need one.

Learn from my mistake don't try to do the 720° turn with the timing plate nut loose and the timing pin installed. The nut self tightens!

WOW!! that is exactly what I was looking for!! thank-you. I'm going to check and see if I can find a similar timing kit, like you said but in the end I need the proper tools to time this engine so it kind of is what it is.

Thanks for the links!! I really appreciate it.

After consulting with a mechanic buddy of mine, I ordered the timing tool kit from GAS so thanks for the link and the step by step instructions from their site will be incredibly helpful!! I'm looking forward to this hands on lesson.

Cheers
