CA Referee - Secondary Air monitor incomplete
Need your desperate assistance. My 2002 X5 3.0i is unable to pass CA Referee smog test. Secondary Air monitor is not setting to complete. All other monitors are complete. There are no error codes, i used 4 different Android apps for scanning and none is showing any errors. Even my mechanic used 2 of his hand scanner and no error codes. I have cold started the car 30 times which is supposed to set secondary Air monitor as completed but no luck, driven full "BMW Drive cycle" 15 times as well. Followed below link and got all monitors ready except secondary air monitor. https://www.instructables.com/id/How...or-Smog-Check/ I checked secondary air pump, working fine. Replaced secondary air valve, vacuum tube, electric valve, non return valve. The whole secondary air system runs as expected when i start the car when completely cold for 1.5 min and then shuts down. I followed the below link and concluded that Secondary Air and all components are working properly. My mechanic also agrees that Secondary air system is working perfectly. https://blog.bavauto.com/12072/bmw-s...to-diy-obd-ii/ I also have BMW Scanner 1.4.0, which is showing a DME internal Error, but this shows up some times and not always. I took my car to 2 other mechanic's and they can't find any problem. Did a smoke test for vacuum leaks, and there is none. Also replaced CCV valve and all housing, DISA valve, both upstream and downstream O2 sensors, cleaned throttle body and idle regulator valve. Also, Heated Catalyst monitor & EGR shows up as N/A, is this correct status for 2002 X5? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! |

About the only thing I can think of you can do is disconnect the PCM connectors and clean them and dress with deoxit gold. Hope a bad connection is causing your grief. It could be a bad connection inside the PCM as well. The intermittent error in the PCM feels like a bad solder joint or dirty connection

Yes. I usually use liquid version but the spray makes sense for the 134 pins in this case.
Just removing and installing the connectors will clean them from wiping. There is a saying about electronics there are only three known remedies: Wait, kick, replace. Some Electronic knomes will just fix themselves, others you need to hit with a hammer (eg clean the contacts). If those don't work usually only replace as an option. With the stupid level of difficulty to replace a DME because of anti theft system, if contact cleaning doesn't work I would send the DME in to one of the fix yours places. For about $200 they will reflow the solder joints and look for any parts they can actually replace.

Do the CA SMOG people have anything to say other than "fail"? Seems that if you've got all this stuff showing no problem, mechanics inspections, etc., maybe they should give you some detail on what they think your problem is. This sounds like extremely specialized info, so I can't really help. But I have a 2001 3.0i, and just got my biennial CA smog check (not the referee thing, if that means a different test) on Saturday. Passed! And then immediately after that I did the BMW Scanner 1.4 thing to update my temp gauge break points (had some posts here on that when doing it). My car runs just fine. Perfectly, actually. No problems at all. Foxwell is happy. No CEL. But the BMW Scanner came up with a bunch of errors. After attempting to clear them all a few times, there are 3 DME errors that won't clear. I did not pay attention to them since I doubt they are meaningful. Anyway, if this helps you decide whether to trace down that DME error your BMW Scanner is showing, there's my data point.

I think the DME errors reported by BMW Scanner 1.4 are void. Both my E53 and my E46 show the same 3 errors as do may other users on other forums. Another issue some have is showing live data in the DME. It works on both my cars but countless others on forums show the selection as grayed out.

I re-read your post and started thinking a little more. I then remembered seeing some similar issues on the Porsche site. Seems to be a much more common issue over there. Could be related.
I did not find it just now, but recall from seeing it earlier that some people really dug into things and figured out how to get the car to clear itself for the testing. Like the normal drive cycle stuff but to the 5th power. Here's one funny post in that thread by someone who finally got his 911 twin turbo ready to go. "SUCCESS! 627 miles all under 3k rpm and never over 60 mph. try that some time for sh*t's and giggles. i seriously considered getting rid of the car. ( for a millisecond )." https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...l#post14076929 Given what you've already done to figure things out for your E53, you might be able to search through info on that Porsche rennlist site and find the secrets. And really, can you imagine driving a 911TT 620 miles under 3k and 60 mph, just hoping it clears itself for the secondary air test? What patience.
