Question X5 E53 2005 4.4i N62 valve cover gasket replacement

Hi guys, so I recently had my oil pressure switch replaced and thought everything was fine. But it appears my valve cover gasket is leaking on the passenger left side (RHD here in Australia). You see many photos/videos of diy on the other side but not this side. The other side is not leaking so I thought I would attempt this side and the other later on. I have to get the kits.

For this engine v8 N62 I see some gasket kits that have the large inner outside gasket with the bolt grommets but there are additional rectangular gaskets. Are these also needed? For example Pelican parts only show the large gasket seal and grommets.

So, my question is has anyone seen a diy on this side? Do I need to remove the timing cover as well.

I will also be replacing the spark plug tubes/pipes.

For a first timmer how long will it take me?

cheers

I'm traveling so can't get into detail.
You do not have to remove timing cover for the valve cover.
Get the kit with the smaller rectangle also.

05 X5 4.4i - you will need to buy that sides valve cover gasket kit along with 1 eccentric shaft sensor gasket,2 cam position sensor gaskets and 1 valvetronic motor o-ring.

I know the kit that I bought had the valvetronic motor gasket with it, the thick one that goes between the valve cover and the valvetronic motor mounting block, it did not ha e the o-ring.

And be super careful of the ground wires that bolt to the valve cover bolts, mine was frozen and stripped I had to vice grip it out.

Heh guys, I was speaking to a mechanic and he was saying that the left side valve cover is common to tend to warp needing another cover. You will get the bolts out but it is hard to put them back in. Is this true? Has anyone experienced this?

cheers

I haven’t seen that, no. Mine came right off and went right back on, no warpage at all that I found.

I think it’s possible to warp a valve cover but I really don’t know how common it is as I know a bunch of guys on here have replaced their valve cover gaskets without issue.

Your mechanic is burnt. I have never heard that being a problem to warp valve covers. On n62 at that. These VC are not cheap either. Upwards of $500us.

I agree with SlickGT1, my original thought was that your mechanic was building himself in a $$ buffer Incase he ran in to issues...

Having had them off, even know they are composite, they struck me as pretty darn durable.

I’ve replaced the valve cover gaskets multiples times on my n62 with no issue. However, I read in the E39 5 series forums that this is a common occurrence on high mileage valve covers, the remedy being adding gasket sealer on top of the new gasket to stop leaks that would otherwise occur soon after the new gasket is replaced.
