Thermostat understanding

Went for a short low speed drive in my project e53 3.0. Scanner connected.

Engine coolant temp gradually rising along with lagging outlet temp.

50/30
60/35
70/42
80/45
90/45
95/47
98/42
Gradually rising 101 but going down to 38
105/35
Pulled into the driveway hit 117/37.


I popped the hood, upper hose is hot and tight, lower hose is not hot and tight.

Almost like the heater element opened the thermostat then it closed back down.

Or, even though I bled it thoroughly, there is still air in the system. Plenty of heat in the cabin.
