I understand all the cademic aspect of thermostat, i.e., exactly how it works but my practical side tells me to replace the tstat every 90K-100K no matter what.

And yes, I only use Wahler brand, which is original mfg.

PS: You are lucky your tstat failed "open". If it failed "closed", you could have overheated the engine! Once your tstat fails, time to pay attention to the rest of cooling system. I wrote a "Partial Cooling Overhaul DIY" in forum, you can search for it.

Thermostat understanding

Wish I’d come across you sooner. This one is in recovery from a blown headgasket replacement and seems everything I throw at it wants to give me trouble. It actually failed closed and I was unable to go more than a mile or two before it started to get above 100. Not gonna let it happen again.

The T-stat I installed as part of the surgery seems to have failed less than 50 miles in. Bought a reman from NAPA in ATL, works fine so far.
