4.8is Door card

Hi All

I'm in the process of doing the window clips and removed the door card per the usual process. Imagine my surprise when the black top plastic mount piece remained on the door frame and the card came away separately.

I suspect the previous owner has had it off and not understood how to remove it.

I have the mount piece and need to glue it back on or fix it in place somehow that will withstand the future removal process.

Does anyone know the best glue I can use here or should I just source a new one?

I hear this is not an uncommon occurrence, although I've not yet seen it myself.

You should be fine glueing it back together. I find black silicon gasket maker works really well as an adhesive on large flat areas like this but I'm sure there are better (proper) adhesives available.

I also use black silicon gasket maker (permatex black to be exact) and have had decent results. Seen this plenty of times. The heat of certain locales, plus age, and inexperienced shop/owner doing window regulator repairs has me repairing a door panel at least once or twice a year.

Yep - same here. Great stuff! I have also used this to repair the fan speed button on my IHKA as well as numerous other tasks.

Hey mate

I used the permatex black as recommended. Got it at Supercheap Auto. Clamped it and left it for a few hours no probs....

I am now working on this same issue - the top plastic piece separated from door card. \

I want to use the Black Permatex gasket maker as recommended here, but I have never used it before and it seems to me it would be too flexible (rubbery) when it cured. I think I need this plastic piece firmly attached (locked) to the door panel as some force is required to release the metal clips that hold the top of the door card.

Others in the E36 crowd like to use 3M windshield adhesive, I have never used that either. Does anybody have any thoughts on the use of either (or other) product? I do live in the northeast, so we have 100+ degree temp swings (-10 to 100 deg F.)

Both will work fine. Both cure to a fairly similar condition as well. Same thing with BMW's beta link adhesive that the factory glues spoilers and body panels on with. Use a liberal application, clamp it, let it cure, and you'll be good.

just following up. The permatex ultra black gasket maker worked GREAT in re-gluing the plastic piece(s) back onto the back of my door panels. I used liberal amounts, clamped it and let it set 24 hrs.
